Strong words Obi Wan..very strong.

Do you think there's any chance of the RN building more Type 45s? Perhaps as many as 12 and maybe a total of 16? Yea I know.. a pipe dream!.

how dare the opener of thread call it the "English" Type 45, did he not know that BAE systems most advanced and well equipped and trained shipyard is the historically based on the Clyde?? as a Scot I am very offended, England couldnt even make a paper boat if it wasnt for Scotland!!!! :p

The second Type 45, HMS Dauntless deployed to Falklands

what do you think guys ?

I think it is overkill, just to protect ~3,000 population (and only 900 British) and with total GDP only $75M

I think the cost of deploying HMS Dauntless + operation cost would be way more than the total GDP, would be much worse if depreciation cost of the ship is included.

And against Argentina ?, which practically has no navy nor air force ?

British tax payer wouldn't be happy as British is on the edge of bankruptcy, very high unemployment, especially for youngsters

it is not all about economics, why did Britain go to war over a island rock thousand miles aay and losse all those lives?? its not because of money its do to with prestige and international standings, when UK re-took the Falklands its reminded everyone that UK is still a naval power, it can go to war and win and will not stand down to bullys #

if UK does not show force then whole world would tommorow be attacking UK interests and that economic damage would be alot more than just $75 million

British armed forces are amongst the best trained in the world, they had to do a job and they did it well

Steady on old chap, as an Englishman I take offence at your taking offence! Historically most UK warship building has taken place 'South' of the Border, and the only reason it has now been concentrated in Scotland was for political reasons (most of the Previous Labour Government's ministers had their constituencies in Scotland). The design work for the T45s was done in England, and large sections were manufactured here too, then shipped up to the Clyde. I'm from a shipbuilding area myself (the North East, incl. Tyneside and Wearside). I grew up with regular news stories on TV and in the local press about warships and commercial vessels under construction. Illustrious and Ark Royal for example. T42s and T22s as well. The decline of the shipbuilding industry was nothing to do with the quality of workmanship. The thread should be renamed however, on that we agree. The Royal Navy's Type 45 Destroyer would be more appropriate, don't you think?

I would like the full order for twelve, but it's not going to happen. The production line is winding down now with just the last two ships to complete. After the Carriers, the next project will be the Type 26 Frigate programme, of which we need at least 13 and more, but this current shambolic administration may order as few as 8 in total. They simply do not understand the value of a Navy, nor the need for one. Giving money to foreign dictators they do understand sadly, probably because they all went to the same schools!

all in good humour my friend, and i was born in 1983 and brought up on the East Coast of Scotland just in case u are thinking i am some old school nationalist!! far from it

but at the end of the day it all comes down to policys and managment, if UK wanted to sort out its act there is no reason why they cant make 12 Type 45s, u have probably heard of the £36 billion "black hole" , thats almost $60 billion, when politicans throw money away like on the Chinnok fiasco no wonder we have no money for the navy

last year alone £23 million worth of military equipment was stolen from UK armed forces, including a paid of £20,000 night vision goggles

UK armed forces needs better managment and a new structure, its even amazing that we have what we do considering the current way things are run

Re: English Type 45 destroyer

We were supposed to get twelve type 45s, to replace the type 42s on one for one basis. Lusty can still operate Harriers, we just don't have any left now they have been sold to the USMC. The Darings will still I believe prove their quality in the coming years, and we shall see their critics silenced by a dose of reality!
No doubt the Darings will live up to expectations and surpass them IMHO, just wish there were more of them.

As to the Lusty...can you say USMC Cross Decking? Popeye is exactly right on this, though you will probably not get it until next year when we, hopefully, swear in a new President ourselves! (and a House and Senate to go with him)

BTW, I have a 1/350 Tragfalgar and Astute coming my way to start my UK Carrier group. Will also get the Lusty from Airfix, and want two of the new Airfix Darings...but they are hopelessly sold out!...and then QE CV when that model comes out, but that may be a while. Ultimately my UK group will have two Darings, two SSNs, the Lusty and the QE. I will add two of the frigates when they come out even later.

I did get the new 1/350 scale PLAN Carrier yesterday and am starting it. Have the 170 Type 52C, the 168 Type 152B, and one of the 956EM Sovs (139), also a PLAN SSN. The Type 054A 1/350 scale is coming out by Trumpeter in June and I may get an advance copy in May and will include two of them in the PLAN group. So I am well on my way to a PLAN Carrier Group consisting of the carrier, 3 DDGs, 2 FFGs and an SSN.

My US Group will include the Big "E" CVN-65, The LHD-7 Iwo Jima, the Arleigh Burke USS Lassen, The Tico USS Bunker Hill, The LCS-1 Freedom, the USS Boise SSN, the USS Texas SSN (all of which I already have...and have finished the LA Class Flight III boat), ultimately either the USS Reagan or the USS Ford, and I am going to throw in the LCS-2 Independence as well. A nice grouping of two CVNs, an LHD, a CG, a DDG, two FFGs and two SSNs...having to use those LCS as FFGs though since they neutered the OHPs...they really should modernize those babies like the Aussies are doing as a bridge. Oh well.

After all of that will come a Rusky group and hopefully an Italian, Spanish and Australian groupings as those models are produced.

I built them a lot 20 years ago when in my 30s. Still have the modernized USS New Jersey, a Tico class with the dual arm launcher (which I will modify into a VLS vessel), a Spruance class, and a brook class...but will now have a lot more.

I had a very severe bout with cancer two years ago that has left me partially disabled (I can walk and work but have some fairly significant disabilites) and am grateful to be alive. So, my wife bought me some tools )nice dremmel tool with all the attachements, and a number of files, picks, etcc.) for Christmas and I started back in. I will be taking pictures and posting them on a site I am going to build.

I will probably post a thread here about each Carrier Strike Group I build.

yeahh it would be good, but the UK would be bankrupt sooner :)
OT
I'm afraid that's right. With the Bank of England buying half of the debt issued by the Treasury and official inflation already at 4.5% trouble is coming to the UK. My favorite financial commentator, the same who predicted that financial crisis would arrive in the US due to the sub-prime mortgages about five years before it happened, said today that the boss of BoE, Mervyn King, was even worst that his Dutch counterparts, which he despises. I don't know what is to be done about it neither.

Cameron's Chckens are coming home to roost! Right now I think the UK Government needs to be humiliated on something like this, to show them beyond a shadow of a doubt that their defence cuts were wrong.

I agree with you Obi Wan!!! Any nation denying its military of its operating budget and funds for equipment maintenance and operation is criminal to the wellbeing of its citizens and the nation’s safety.
