Absolutely shocking turn of events and a real shame as she was a fine looking ship.

Ships are most vulnerable to fire hazards near the end of their construction but before being handed over since most of the fixtures and fittings, fuel and maybe even weapons would have been installed, which tend to be more flammable than bare bulkheads, but the crew would not yet be onboard, so even a small fire could easily get out of control.

Having said that, the way the superstructure of the ship burned so fiercely is a very worrying sign and I would sure as hell not want to be serving on such a ship as even a near miss might set the whole thing alight and turn the ship into a deathtrap irrespective of how well trained the crew is at damage control.

The main thing is... why was that ship on fire, was it design issues (wrongly laid or designed circuit boards, wire shocks, etc?) or was it mishandling issue. If it was a mishandling issue that caused the unfortunate accident, then in actuality, the problem can be solved relatively easy to solve (aka. training of the crews or operators).

If it was a design issue that caused the demise of the ship, then the Indonesian would have to go back to their drawing board and have a good look at what goes wrong.

either way... wish that the next stealth boat will be good and going, it is always a shame to see something that people worked so hard on going down the drain (the sea in this instance).

For one, some top brass in the Indonesian Navy is going to lose his job...the lead ship of the class, a spanking new boat got written off in a fire at port, that's very serious responsibility.

From what I heard, the ship had not been handed to the Navy yet.

Even when it did, I don't think those high up enough will get biten too badly, most probably some poor engineers and their managers would get it big time.

Perhaps Indonesian navy (TNI-AL) should buy Type 022 (Houbei class) from China or if have healthy budget ... just follow Pakistan navy to acquire Azmat class ship.

According to a news on the Indonesian forum (mind you don't take it seriously) The boat was supposed to be "tested" but an unforeseen accident broke out & you know the result.

Lets hope the other 3 won't share the same fate

Leopards & Marders for the TNI-AD
Leopard will be shipped with Marder in early November 2012. Current Chief of Staff of the Army (Chief of Staff) was there and would return on 30 September 2012, "

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Some of the main battle tank (Main Battle Tank / MBT) Leopard and medium battle tank of the German Marder scheduled to arrive in Indonesia in early November 2012 with deliveries made via air and ocean freight.

"Leopard will ship with Marder in early November 2012. Now Chief of Staff of the Army (Chief of Staff) was there and would return on 30 September 2012," said Head of Public Communication Ministry of Defence Maj. Gen. Hartind Asrin in Makodiv-1 Kostrad , Cilodong, Depok, West Java, on Tuesday.

Delivery of this first phase, he said, would come around 15 units of tank weighs 60 tons, while for Marder tank yet known how many will be coming.

Advisor to Defence Minister, said the security field, prepared two aircraft that will be used specifically to transport the tanks. "But later combined shipping, some by plane, some by boat," said Hartind.

Delivery is delayed from the original plan in October 2012 because of constrained future administration. In November, the tanks will be shown to the public.

Earlier, Deputy Defense Minister Sjafrie said, the government purchase Leopard tanks as many as 103 units, some 50 units Marder tanks and buy 10 tanks supporters.

Finalization of the contract signing is expected to be done late September 2012. "The Rheinmetall (producers) will be in Indonesia to finalize the signing of the contract which will be held on the fourth week of September 2012," he said.
