Re: »Ø¸´: PLAN submarines Thread II

The news was, some two years ago, that the problems with the concept were solved - that would I think refer to the fuel processing - and that the first reactor is to be built by 2020. That likely refers to the civilian use of these reactors but the naval reactors might be expected around the same time. Seeing the advantages of these reactors - a much higher operating temperature so a higher efficiency and a much lower thermal power for a given electrical output - a more compact and lighter plant - the absorption of many of the neutrons produced by the Thorium splitting to produce Uranium so a much lower weight of lead shielding - these reactors must be irresistable for nuclear boats and for flattops and their support groups. But it is much too early for any rumors about PLAN's planning to appear.

I just saw a report on Chinese thorium reactors not too long ago. Ex-president Jiang Zemin's son Jiang Mianheng is heading up the government research effort into thorium reactors. It's a pretty big operation with some $350MM in funding and 700+ Ph.D.s working on it. They plan to build a proof of concept reactor in the 2MW range before 2016. So depending on how that goes, we may eventually see a prototype used for propulsion, but I'm fairly confident that's at least 2 decades out.

More news on the potential sale of 2 x 035G subs to the Bangladesh Navy via The Diplomat (take with a grain of salt but it provided some dates that I wasn't previously aware of)

The New Age report said that the deal, which is waiting for final approval from the Finance Ministry, for the two submarines was worth $203.3 million. It would be paid by Bangladesh during the fiscal year 2017-2018, with the submarines being delivered in 2019. Seventeen Bangladeshi sailors are being trained to operate the submarines, the report said, presumably in China.

The New Age report said that the Bangladesh Navy had purchased land in Kutubdia Island where it planned to construct a submarine base.

She is one BIG sub !!

actually I was thinking the opposite (no offence) LOL I was going to say by comparing the person on top of the sail you can roughly gauge her size if you have a good eye...she is 'regular' size for a sub if that makes any sense!

A Typhoon is a GIANT mama! Ohios are pretty darn big too but nowhere close to a Typhoon. Oscars don't have tall sails but very wide.

That's a Delta IV which itself is a good size boomer yet she is dwarfed by the Typhoon in the background!!!
