Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Technically this is not a submarine only story but i will post it here. And can someone confirm or refute this story about Chinese subs using German engines ? Did UK sell AEW systems to China ?

I can't speak for the specific claim made about these subs using European designed motors, but the tone of the article is belittling and seemingly gives Westerners the credit for the entirety of China's military modernization. That much is evident just in the title of the article. It cherry-picks and overemphasizes a few examples where foreign tech is incorporated in Chinese ships and hardly mentions the tremendous efforts that Chinese engineers put into their own designs, as well as in adapting the meager, fragmentary, and often outdated Western gear that slips through the arms embargo into modern, comprehensive weapons systems.

Its biased tone subverts its credibility.

The German economy is the healthiest in Europe in large measure thanks to the very varied German export to China. Half of EU export to China comes from Germany. The licence production of MTU diesels is a small part of that and a small proportion of those diesels serve PLAN.
This article is loosely worded and tendentious.

That article has a clear intent to single out MTU for some kind of public shaming. as to Reuter's motivation.

"A subsequent House investigation was suppressed, though a leak it was published in the Village Voice. The House report indicated that Reuters news service was frequently used for CIA disinformation, and that media manipulation may have been the "largest single category of covert action projects taken by the CIA." According to the watchdog group Public Information Resource, propaganda expenses in the 70s may have exceeded $285 million a year. This was more than "the combined budgets of Reuters, United Press International, and the Associated Press.""

It rubbish the news of UK selling advance AWACS system to China. The only thing they sell is the sky bolt MPA AWACS system in the 80s which is obsolete by today standard. And its til now used in limited service only with PLANAF own upgrade.

The report on the chip smuggling reads like a analogy of the war on drugs; what does it say about the effectiveness of the ITAR when they basically have the FBI jumping at shadows. It seems to me that it is aimed to punish, harass and basically create bureaucracy for the bureaucracy's sake rather than protect any kind of IP. I mean it hasn't stopped China advancing in these areas, it hasn't slowed the rate of "smuggling", it has only encouraged law enforcement to redefine the law to serve their own purposes.

Dhaka finalises deals with Beijing Shakhawat Hossain

LBangladesh has finalized a deal to buy two submarines from China, officials said.

The ships would strengthen the Bangladesh Navy protecting the country’s resources in the Bay, they said.

The state-to-state deal would cost Bangladesh Tk 1,600 crore or US$203.3 million to procure the two Ming class submarines, they said.
The type 035G diesel-electric run submarines are scheduled to be delivered in 2019.

The allocation sought by the Armed Forces Division in this connection awaits finance ministry approval. Bangladesh Navy plans to make the payments to China’s state-owned suppliers from the current fiscal to 2017-18, said officialsArmed Forces Division principal staff officer Lieutenant General Abu Belal Muhammad Shafiul Huq said in January that the deal to procure the submarines were under negotiation.Around 17 Bangladesh Navy sailors are receiving training on how to operate submarines.

The Navy acquired land in Kutubdia Island in Cox’s Bazaar to set up a submarine base.

Bangladesh Navy needs to deploy submarines to safeguard the country’s interests in its waters, Dhaka University international relations professor Imtiyaz Ahmed told New Age.

$100 million US each for a Ming?

Delivery in 2019.

What, are these new builds? Or are they just going to take that long for Bangladesh to get the funding together? Just seems like a long time to wait for two Mings.

$100 MM seems steep for a Ming ... Also I'm thinking the same as Jeff. Why 2019? Is that when the PLAN will be retiring its Ming fleet?

I don't know where this story originated from it. Saw it on Chinese forum and also on Indian sites like this.

What I read on Chinese forum is that these will be new builds, which would make sense with the delivery time. I don't think it actually takes that long to build 035Gs, but it probably will take a while to set up the infrastructure in Bangladesh for submarines. And I'm sure the cost includes all the training and support for 035G, but sitll seems strange they are building 035G instead of Songs. I would imagine Songs would be pretty cheap by now.

PLAN has been retiring MING's since 2010, when the four oldest in 2 Submarine Flotilla Qingdao started being replaced by the four oldest SONG's, replaced in 22 Submarne Flotilla Daxiedao by YUAN's.

The MING's in 12 Submarine Flotilla Lushun have now begun to be replaced by new construction YUAN's.

It is conceivable that Bangladesh might be interested in the four most recent MING's, the four Type 035B in 52 Submarine Flotilla Xiachuandao. 2019 as retirement date for those looks reasonable.
