Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Can someone give the numbering for these boats like 401 is Type 091 first unit how many 40x do we have?

Anyone know the numbering scheme for all the Chinese nuclear submarines?

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

The interior of 092 nuke sub looks like old style Soviet sub where a lot of things are controlled thru manually turning of the knob or switch like from the movie K19 from the 60s.

China needs to step up its game in constructing a more modern nuke subs for 095,096.

I believe that was an 091. And considering it would have been designed in the late 70s at best I think you can give them the benefit of doubt.

That's around the time of the cultural revolution where intellectuals were not too welcome, to make an understatement. Were professors, engineers, scientists considered intellectuals? If so, it's amazing China even managed to build her first nuclear submarine, albeit taking a bit of more time.

1 Submarine Base Shazikou:

Type 091 401, 402 (both decommissioned), 403, 404, 405
Type 092 406

2 Submarine Base Yulin:

Type 093 407, 408
Type 094 409 (where visited by Xi Jingping in the spring)

Type 094 410 and 411 are mainly still at the Submarine Test, Trials and Training Base Xiaopingdao, thus probably not fully operational.

They are inventively named Long March 1 (长征1号) to 11.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

according to the Chinese bbs releases, one of the 094s is in the Qingdao base now while the other one is still at Xiaopingdao. So in terms of actually in service, we have 3 091s, 1 092, 2 093 and 2 094. 2 other 094 and 1 093B are launched and in sea trials. They also claimed that there is a 093 in Qingdao, but I have yet to confirm that.

Ok so we have

3 x Type 091 SSN boats 403, 404 and 405
1 x Type 092 SSBN boat 406
2 x Type 093 SSN boats 407 and 408
2 x Type 094 SSBN 409 and 410

And there is further 2 x Type 094 SSBN in trials so is that 411 and 412?

Also the 1 x Type 093B SSN which number is that boat? 413?

I count 6 SSN and 5 SSBN total 11 operational nuclear submarines, on par with Royal Navy who has 7 SSN and 4 SSBN or France who has 6 SSN and 4 SSBN

On par in numbers, but certainly not in capabilities. The existing Shang class will not fair well against the Trafalgar, and certainly jnot against the Astutes. And the Vanguards are significantly more quiet and more capable than the Jin. Now, the upcoming Type 095 SSBN and Type 096 SSN are yet to be seen.

Based on my own sources, I have the following, which is very close to what Tphuang posted:

3 - Type 091 Han Class SSN in service
2 - Type 093 Shang Class SSN in service
2 - Type 093B Shang Class SSN, one in service, one in trials.

1 - Type 092 Xia Class SSBN in service
4 - Type 094 Jin Class SSBN, 2 in service and 2 in trials

That's 12 nuclear submarines altogehter. 7 SSN and 5 SSBN.

I believe that the first Type 095 SSBN and Type 096 SSN may well be building as we speak.

Well I would say this, for SSBN I would believe four are getting to be built that is the Type 094 Class

That's one out on patrol
One on a training excercise
One in re-fit
And one ready to go/in overhaul/dry dock or repairs etc

So four is the magic number to have one operational on deterrence at anyone time that's the way it is for the UK and France, you cut to three and its not the same so four Type 094 SSN is defo the number there

I believe there will be also four Type 096 SSBN to make 8 SSBN altogether

For SSN if serial production has started and they have in fact 2 Type 093 and two more capable Type 093B then that also makes sense as we should see four more Type 095 SSN

I would say all Type 091 and 092 are retired in the coming years when Type 095 and Type 096 enter service

Total is 8 SSN and 8 SSBN giving 16 nuclear submarines, there is four piers at Yulin and four piers at Qingdao that's 16 berthing spaces makes perfect sense!
