Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

I watched the CCTV show on youtube last night. The captain had to speak loudly in the nuclear sub to overcome the engine noise. He also showed a bed for tall people located in between two piece of machinaries (engines?). The background noise was very high. Can't connect to youtube right now. Will try to post the link tonight. It's on the CCTV Military channel if you want to find it on your own

If I remember correctly. The Submarine was tracked from the harbor where it berth and tail then the US transmit the location to the JMSDF. Normally when you watch the other guy submarine you let the other guy know that he is being watch. Sometime they even ping to let them know . That is how the game is played during the cold war.

INCORRECT! you do not let the other person know he is being tracked just like the other guy is not going to let you know he knows you know. That is the nature of sub surface warfare either in peacetime, war time and/or especially during the cold war etc. IF out of a sudden you have a mission change and need to maintain strategic or tactical advantage you're screwed if he already knows you're there. No different than when a USN sub trailed a vessel out of Severomorsk, Novorossiysk etc or nowadays maybe Dalian, Sanya etc...

As to submarine patrols I want to add that there is a difference between SSN patrols and SSBN patrols. They are two very different things. I assume people are referring to SSN patrols here because strategic SSBN deterent patrols are not the same thing.

I believe only very very recently has China conducted actual strategic SSBN patrols. The SSBN patrol is part of the originating country's strategic deterrent triad (nuclear triad) and their mission objectives and patrol profiles are extremely different than those of an SSN.

Y. Zhuo has claimed the following things:

- a newer technology model has been created, suggesting the completion of construction of the 095 and/or 096

- attempts to hide submarine development has been done for honors, and SSN/SSBN research will be more transparent in the future

- there are still gaps between PLAN SSN/SSBN and US and Western ones (you don't say?)

- JL-2 is considered an "ICBM" by Chinese standards, which classify missiles above 3000 km as such, and claims that the JL-2 has over 10000 km range

I just posted an entry on my blog of my thoughts on 091. Wrote it a little fast, so not as complete as I would like it. Anyhow,

Look at all those holes...no wonder it's a noisy boat.

.... Pretty sure that holes aren't exactly indicative of acoustics. USS nautilus, the first SSN ever, had virtually no holes. Hell, even 091, supposedly ridiculously loud when first launched, bore a very smooth hull.

If anything, 094 should be the quietest out of all Chinese nuclear submarines because being a larger sub means more space for noise dampening
