First official confirmation that an AIP system has been tested on a submarine came in 2003 from 711th Institute, pointed to a Jan 29th, 2003 date when underwater liquid oxygen release test was conducted. So it's safe to assume an AIP is onboard a submarine in 2002, probably on a Ming. At that time China has just started serial production of Song. The first Yuan, 330, was delivered from Wuhan in 2005, and is believed to be the prototype of this first class of AIP powered SSKs. This sub was tested extensively for over two years, most likely trying to finalize the AIP setup. The second Yuan wasn't delivered until 2008, but after that construction had been ongoing at a steady pace.

Although we don't know for sure that a Type 095 SSN is in production it is probably likely

Type 093 still has flaws and would not be 100% suited for a hunter killer in a carrier strike group which can clock 30+knots submerged

PLAN has gone about its carrier business in a very professional manner with all the elements coming online nicely apart from the SSN, and its in submarines that China actually has a a lot of experience so I don't think it's that long before a Type 095 is spotted which will make up the sub-surface force of a carrier battle group

Laioning
2 x Type 052C/D
3 x Type 54A
1 x Type 903A
And a SSN which is likely to be a Type 095 a world class ocean going nuclear attack submarine which can race ahead of a carrier in excess of 30 knots

So I count 8 vessels in the Chinese carrier group

ONLY one Type 903A sub? They need two, just like the US Navy has two hunter/killer Sea Wolf type on their carrier battle group.

Well USN sometimes use one and sometimes two SSN no harm either way depends on the mission I guess

I added in a surface flotilla of 4 ships 2 for ASW and 2 for AAW

The replenishment tanker will not be able to keep up with the task force at full pace hence a Type 054A FFG would provide the escort thats why I said 3 x FFG

and yes Type 903A is the tanker not the sub!

The US has only three total Sea Wolf type submarines and one of those, the USS Jimmy Carter was lengthened significantly to help conduct special operations and other special missions. So you have the Sea Wolf and the Connecticut available.

The US has ten Carrier Battle Groups. So the US rarely uses Sea Wolf submariens with its carriers.

The principle submarine being used currently with the carriers are the large numbers of ADCAP (Advanced Capability) Los Angels Class SSNs, the Flight III and sometimes the Flight II boats. The US still has 42 LA Class boats, and 23 of them are Flight III boats, and 8 are Flight II boats. Usually the US has a single SSN with a carrier strike group. On occassion (depending on the makeup of the group and its mission) they may operate two.

Over time, the new Virginia Class boats (of which there are now 10 with two new ones being built each year) will take over the carrier escort duties. They are quieter, more lethal, and a generation ahead of the LA Class boats.

Nobody ever tells anything about that boat. Heck, on navy.mil the photos of the Jimmy Carter are few and far between. No new photos of the Carter have been posted since 2006. Wow..

I wish we China watchers had more real info about Chinese subs. Oh well. I'm really interested in the deployment of these boats.

We have quite a few photos regarding SSKs, but the PLAN keeps information about SSN and SSBNs wrapped up tight, for good reason. They rightly recognize the strategic value of such vessesl.
