This is almost certainly an SLBM test sub. I wonder what is that struture at the front of the submarine? something related to the testing?

The background seems to the jiangnan shipyard.

This is nothing new, evidently a SLBM test boat to replace the antique Golf class boat, primary an enlarged sail housing one launch tube for SLBM.

A report on SSN 403 (Type 091) captain. It say that 403 shot successfully a new type of torpedo, without elaborating. In the past SSN 403 was often given experimental or validation missions, which earned him the distinction "Pioneer submarine" that he alone has the right to carry.

The PLAN needs to learn to stop shouting orders, especially in a submarine....

Totally! They need to switch over to each station having headsets much like the wester navies. I was shocked to see those WWII styled sound tubes onboard a sub in this day and age! But then again this is an old sub, dating back before they bought the Kilos, so maybe we should cut them some slacks? With that thought, maybe we should compare this to an Skipjack class to be fair...

No. PLA forces are designed to operate in all environments so that they don't break down and cry like other armies when the headset breaks or the batteries run out. They are altogether a tougher force when the going gets tough, and their strategies are designed to work when the only fighting equipment left are sticks, stones, and maybe an occasional gong.
