Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Do you think Pakistan would be interested to acquire HAN class SSN ex China Navy. It is obviously not a world class SSN ... but heyyy SSN is a SSN. I think China Navy would be more than happy to sell (mate price) it to Pakistan Navy

China navy have 4 Type 091, 5 Type 093 and 2 Type 097 SSN

It really doesn't seem to make a lot of sense from what I can see. I think you can lease ssn, but not sell it out right.

Also, I think you mean 095, not 097?

Why not ? ... Type 091 is relatively obsolete anyway, China Navy should get rid of them asap.

My bad ... yes 2 Type 095 SSN ... started their sea trials around the summer of 2011.

They are considered strategic weapons. Have you seen any nation actually export strategic weapons? Countries may assist other countries in building strategic weapons, but I don't remember seeing actual exports. It's not a matter of being obsolete or not.

Not that I for one second think that China might provide Pakistan with nuclear submarines (it was enough to give them the blueprints for a nuclear bomb).

But it is a well known fact that Russia has sold (officially leased) the newest Pr. 971I AKULA class nuclear submarine K-152 NERPA to India, where it was commissioned as the CHAKRA on 04.04.12.

In the 1988, the obsolete Pr. 670 CHARLIE I class nuclear submarine K-43 was also leased to India and served as the CHAKRA until returned to Russia in 1991.

The US has sold first Polaris, then Trident II SLBM’s to Great Britain.

There is a big difference between sell and lease. US and GB are both countries allowed to have nuclear arsenal under NPT, Pakistan is not.

If I am not mistaken, I believe there is an option on the agreement between Russia and India, at the end of the lease, for India to outright purchase the Akula II if they decide they want to keep it. My understyanding is that there is also the potential to have a second one built (I do not know if it would be in Russia or India) for the Indians so they have two if they want.

I am not 100% sure on this, but that is my recollection. We shall see.

I am not sure of the details of the Russo-Indian agreement, either.

There was long talk of two AKULA's, but so far it has ended with the one. I do not know the status of Komsomolsk Yd.No. 519 laid down in 1994 (CHAKRA/NERPA is Yd.No. 518), but there seems to be a faint chance that it may be completed, if the Indians are interested. It is probably out of the question to build one in India.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

I think there is an agreement for the lease of a second Akula, but I don't believe there was anything about outright export. Both agreement was basically India pays for the construction and get it leased for 10 years and then return it to Russia.

ohh well I agree then, "lease" would be politically more acceptable. China could "lease" 2 older type 091 (402 and 403 perhaps) to Pakistan for let's say 10-15 years. So Pakistan would have hands on experience in operating SSN

Pakistan requirment is for a submarine which can operate far from home shores and work completely independently, currently no nuclear Chinese submarine fulfills this requirment

Pakistan submariners are risk takers and brave, in 1971 war Pakistan submarine scored first submarine kill since WWII when PNS Hangor sunk ASW frigate INS Khukri and damaged INS Kirpan, the PNS Ghazi was sent thousands of miles away to to the bay of bengal to hunt down the lone Indian aircraft carrier

If Pakistan navy gets a SSN it will be tasked to hunt down Indian aircraft carriers and disturb Indian naval operations as much as possible
