Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Qingdao-Shazikou is 1 Submarine Base (潜艇1基地), Sanya-Yulin is 2 Submarine Base (潜艇2基地).

I don't know about the base designation, but the Sanya one is 31st Submarine flotilla.

Yu-6 has been developed for a few years, but there maybe newer variant of it coming out. And the testing phase can take several years.

That would in fact be quite new. In that case, there ought also to be a flotilla at Shazikou.

It would however be meaningless to have a submarine base with just one subordinate flotilla, so it might be that the bases have been renamed.

A base is a corps-level command. A flotilla is a division-level command. A nuclear submarine is a brigade-level command.

Yeah you are right!.This new Torpedo should be development beyond Yu 6 Let see Yu6 was commission in 2005.Somewhere around 2003 they should start development for new torpedo. Now is 2012 should be about the right time frame.

Another thing YU 6 is both surface and anti Submarine torpedo. This new torpedo should be exclusively used against submarine . A welcome development since the biggest threat that is facing China is submarine launched missiles.
Combine with the Y8GX ASW Plane this is really good news.Even better make stand off Torpedo by adding a strap on winglet and GPS guided navigation system. I guess they are now getting serious on ASW warfare. Now if they can get type 95 launched this year,it would immensely strengthen their ASW warfare

The Yu-6 is the 533mm wire-/acoustic-/wake-homing heavy torpedo designed by 705 Institute (also known as Xi’an Precision Machinery Institute), a R&D branch of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) in Xi’an, Shaanxi province. The Yu-6 is the most advanced and capable indigenous torpedo in service with the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), designed to engage both deep-diving submarines and surface ships. The torpedo entered the PLAN service in 2005,

I don't think the Type 095 is meant for that. Its nuclear power and supposedly cruise missiles point to the fact that it is meant to be an ocean going strike force. The Type 039/041/041B should be more than enough to handle enemy boats.

Not if you want to hunt nuclear submarine Well the fastest speed for conventional sub is 15 knot .A nuclear submarine can go 30 knot

I think there is different naming convention for the base, destroyer flotilla, frigate flotilla and submarine flotilla. I haven't caught on to it yet.

I've also seen a 43rd submarine flotilla. Don't know what that is though.

Most welcome picture!

Submarine construction has been very quiet at Wuhan after they over-exerted themselves by launching no less than four submarines, that is twice the normal rate of two, in 2010 – the big experimental submarine and three YUAN II’s (all four can be seen in the last GE update 07.12.10).

This one must be YUAN II Hull 5, since one was also launched at Jiangnan in June/July 2011.

Thanks. How many hulls for YUAN I?

That is a hotly debated issue, but I think 8 YUAN I: 1 in 2006, 2 each in 2007-2009, 1 in 2010 (the one seen in post # 725).
