So already 13 YUAN in total?? Wonder how many they will built??
So, there are what, 8 Yuan I, 4 Yuan II, and then the single new one which some are calling a different class altoghter, the Qing Class? Or are there 5 Yuan II and the Qing counted seperately?

8 Yuan I, 5 Yuan II and the Qing sub.

QING is not an official US class name, and ONI has not yet informed the world what they call it.

It was known more or less from the outset that there would be 16 YUAN, based on the order for MTU diesels (you can find that in the China Military Power report). What is not known is whether those built at Jiangnan (four, like the four SONG's built by Jiangnan?) are part of this or an additional order (I think it is).

So, 14 altogether then. A nice run of a very decent AIP SSK.

That's why I worded it as, "some are calling a different class altoghter, the Qing Class". One day the US will either come up with a different name for it, or lump it into the Yuan classification. Either way, there are a total of what looks like 14 now.

So you are expecting for 20 YUAN in total?

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

There was the original Yuan (330) from 2005.
Then they built 3 Yuan (331-333) in the second wave.
The first 4 were 039A.

Starting from the end of 2010, we started seeing the launching of 039B. By my calculation, there has been at least 3 039B joining service that were built in WC and 1 that is about to join from JN shipyard. And now, we have that new 039B that just got launched a while ago in WC.

So, close to 8 Yuans in service and a couple of more under construction.

btw, my blog entry spells out the current orbat of Chinese submarines.

Huitong's finally added this pic to his 095 description in the 093 entry

095.jpg

and now instead of calling 095 similar to vanilla 688, it's now "The design has been speculated to be comparable to American improved Los Angeles class SSN (688i) in terms of capability."
... We'll probably have to wait until the real thing comes out for people to start comparing it with seawolf/virginia but at least huitong adding to his site means there's probably some degree of credence to the model being 095...

A little surprised he's giving possibility to the magnetohydrodynamic/all electric propulsion too.

That second one was floated around ages ago, and said to maybe be an SSK. Not sure about the first.
