Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

I agree with the thinking behind this (increased budgets, increased tech level etc), but I would caution against using decades as mathematical constants that can be used to calculate capability...

Yes, nothing so precise and I wasn't advocating a universal "pass 20 years, gain one generation!" type of deal. My point was simply that; based on the time, money, previous experience and current technology at the displosal of the chinese it would be very surprising to me if 095 isn't in virginia/seawolf's ballpark in acoustic stealth/noise reduction.

I have no idea how recent these pictures are but theres no reason why it couldn't be recent -- certainly not based on picture quality given lighting, optical zoom or simply having a bad camera/camera phone could all produce similar quality photos.

Just think of all the blurry pics we got of J-20 before the amateur photographers went in.

As for when we'll see real photos of this thing -- apparently its in some stage of advanced construction now. Hopefully with the proliferation of the Internet compared to ten years ago we'll get pics sooner rather than later
First picture is the Dec 15, 2005 visit of Wuhan's 719th Institute by Zhang Yunchuan, at the time Chairman of COSTIND (now SASTIND).

Hey guys here's a clip of a 2009 US sea power hearing on submarines. They discuss mostly about how big the submarine fleet should be to meet potential changes. I.E. China

Interesting post. But what is this 31st nuclear submarine flotilla? Is that brought out of 2nd nuclear submarine base? I haven't seen it referred anywhere else...

The 31st nuclear submarine flotilla is the one based in Sanya. The one in NSF is 1st flotilla I think?

btw, there is an article here talking about a new type of Chinese torpedo. Not really sure what this torpedo is. Maybe it's Yu-6? Regardless, it mentions that it's designed for submarines rather than surface ships. It's your typical article about how great China's new weapons are. It boasts that this torpedo is fired against an active duty submarine from the south sea fleet (I'm assuming ming class here). It says that it took ten years to develop this torpedo. They claim this torpedo is world class.

I have heard of projects beyond the Yu-6, so it wouldn't be surprising to hear of newer developments like that reaching production now.

Yeah you are right!.This new Torpedo should be development beyond Yu 6 Let see Yu6 was commission in 2005.Somewhere around 2003 they should start development for new torpedo. Now is 2012 should be about the right time frame.

Another thing YU 6 is both surface and anti Submarine torpedo. This new torpedo should be exclusively used against submarine . A welcome development since the biggest threat that is facing China is submarine launched missiles.
Combine with the Y8GX ASW Plane this is really good news.Even better make stand off Torpedo by adding a strap on winglet and GPS guided navigation system. I guess they are now getting serious on ASW warfare. Now if they can get type 95 launched this year,it would immensely strengthen their ASW warfare

The Yu-6 is the 533mm wire-/acoustic-/wake-homing heavy torpedo designed by 705 Institute (also known as Xi’an Precision Machinery Institute), a R&D branch of the China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) in Xi’an, Shaanxi province. The Yu-6 is the most advanced and capable indigenous torpedo in service with the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), designed to engage both deep-diving submarines and surface ships. The torpedo entered the PLAN service in 2005,
