Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Could it be where they spool out a towed array.

Thanks :)
I condisdered that too, but is that typeof set up common? I know Russian subs like akula have the bulb for TAS, the borei has the similar set up on the tail like 094 but western SSNs seem to have TAS spooled from the actual hull itself?

The tail of the 094 just seems too small to coil any distance of line, but we've heard the 094 has had TAS for years... two and two make four I suppose. In anycase 094 with its TAS wil have a decent set of sonar then, with the three flank sonars either side like 093 and the bow and TAS for forward and aft coverage.

The advanced Los Angles Class 688is have them spooled out of the aft tail fins like this. The Flight III vessels.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Huitong's finally added this pic to his 095 description in the 093 entry

095.jpg

It was rumored that Type 095 might feature vertically launched SLCMs, magnetohydrodynamic drive and all electric propulsion, but these have not been confirmed. The latest rumor (December 2011) suggested that the first 095 is under construction at Bohai Shipyard. The design has been speculated to be comparable to American improved Los Angeles class SSN (688i) in terms of capability.

and now instead of calling 095 similar to vanilla 688, it's now "The design has been speculated to be comparable to American improved Los Angeles class SSN (688i) in terms of capability."
... We'll probably have to wait until the real thing comes out for people to start comparing it with seawolf/virginia but at least huitong adding to his site means there's probably some degree of credence to the model being 095...

A little surprised he's giving possibility to the magnetohydrodynamic/all electric propulsion too.

I think A Mace posted one of these pics a few months back. here's others from the same set

I'd really like to know where this model was displayed, lots of similarities but not quite identical to virginia.

My impression, or this photos are quite old, specially the submarine model ? I dont think you get photos of this quality today. These photos seem to be years-old

Good point Kroko, I agree. The real 095 submarine will be probably different from these images. In your opinion if they're buiding 095 now when do you think the first official pics will be released? This year, after the first tests in the sea, or the unveiling is still few years away? With 093 if I remember correctly the sub officially appeared only years after first sea tests.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

I have no idea how recent these pictures are but theres no reason why it couldn't be recent -- certainly not based on picture quality given lighting, optical zoom or simply having a bad camera/camera phone could all produce similar quality photos.

Just think of all the blurry pics we got of J-20 before the amateur photographers went in.

As for when we'll see real photos of this thing -- apparently its in some stage of advanced construction now. Hopefully with the proliferation of the Internet compared to ten years ago we'll get pics sooner rather than later

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

^ I wouldn't say it's necessarily shorter. Compare 093 with 688. Both are purported to be 110m long but 093 has a larger sail relative to its length. If anything, if we compare Russian and other nations SSNs it would appear USN subs' sails are smallest (relative to overall length)

improved LA class? then we are talking of 80´s USN tech. Still, its better than the type 093 which is supposed to correspond with soviet 70´s sub tech.

I wonder how it compares to the Yasen class. Perhabs not as good as the russian sub, but not too far.
