Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

I wonder, with the acquisition of carriers during this decade, if the PLAN are going to compromise on SSNs given there was that whole CV vs SSN debate durign the 80s and 90s.

We haven't heard of 095 for a while and 093 and 094 production has been dubious at best over the last few years :(

Come on. If they had any more releases of new platforms this year we would all die from fanboygasm.:p

probably because they didnt like type 093 and 094. According to a US report, they are as noisy as soviet submarines from the 70´s. Something also present in huitong´s site, which says that 095 was developed because PLAN wasnt satisfied with 093

type 094 is based in the same hull of the old xia class. I doubt is noise level is anything good.

maybe thats why they develop the new big SSK. To fill a gap in capabilities. But thats pure speculation.

I don't think anyone took that ONI report you speak of seriously
093 is obviously not up to par with the seawolf or virginia so of course the PLAN wasn't very satisfied.

Larger SSKs will only offer some of an SSNs range/endurance and I think that's just a natural evolution from the Song to Yuan to Yuan+.... We're still waiting on 095.

I wonder if we barely hear anything about 095 and the even more elusive 096 because they're considered so much more important to "national security," and that it's easier to construct them within enclosed facilities? With previous accounts from the likes of tphuang a few years back the PLAN should've launched an 095 or two by now... Things change I suppose.

Does anyone remember when we first got 093 pictures and when 093 should've been launched? that might give an indication on 095.

Development of a portable anti-submarine warfare simulation system completed successfully
So reports CCTV, there was no technical data given.

But it seems the PLAN were well aware of where they are short-legged.

Apparently, the new submarine + one of the Yuans is sailing to the naval base near Shanghai for sea trials before getting delivered to PLAN. Some speculated said that due to the current low water level in Yangtze river, it actually can't sail there by itself. And others are buzzing that this submarine is replacing the No. 200 gulf class SLBM test ship.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

The mystery sub just got more mysterious with this weird massive panel on its sail...

I don't know of any "conventional" SSKs or SSNs that have a similar feature.

Thoughts of what this could be for? :)

-cough cough- golf replacement? -cough cough-

Possible, but it looks more reminiscent of a Soviet style crew escape capsule too though. Indeed, now I think about it the entire sail reminds me of the Sierra II class. And it is difficult to see what purpose that panel would serve for an SLBM launch.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Mr. tphuang, I know you are not going to rely on a Google Earth photo to differentiate between yuan and song, but it looks strongly to me as if there are two YUAN at Xiapingdao and one at Qingdao-Shazikou (which in the West is often referred to as Jianggezhuang) on the latest GE imagery of these two places, both dated 29 March 2011.

This is substantiated by a "horizontal" photo, published 20 March 2011, which showed one YUAN at the pier in Xiaopingdao where the two were seen on GE.

The first YUAN picture from the North Sea Fleet was one at Lushun published 1 July 2008. I would guess that was Hull 5, now at Shazikou, that Hull 6 went to Daxiedao, and that Hulls 7 and 8 subsequently went to Xiaopingdao.

Of course, there is also the possibility that the three YUAN's you think are at Daxiedao all went to NSF.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

For those who find nuclear submarines exciting, I should add that there were, on 29 March 2011, six at Shazikou: 1 JIN, 1 prob. XIA, 2 SHANG (incl. 1 in drydock), and 2 HAN. At Xiaopingdao, there were 2 JIN in addition to 1 GOLF and the 2 YUAN.

If we assume that there are still 1 JIN, 2 SHANG and 2 HAN at Sanya-Yulin, we have a quite complete picture of PLAN’s SSN/SSBN fleet.
