I don't trust sina.com but I saw a similar write up posted on CDF and this kind of claim (and mission/test) would be expected about now anyway. We will see very quickly, if it is legitimate or not.

Here's to hoping for good pictures.

My confusion is why is the PLAN lumping their lone aircraft carrier with 051Cs rather than more capable air defense ships like 052C? That isn't to say the 051Cs are lightweights, but it seems a little counter intuitive especially when 051C doesn't have full 360 SAM coverage and their steam turbine propulsion is inferior to more modern gas turbines.

The Liaoning, the two Type 051Cs and two Type 054As.

That will be a very decent Carrier grouping. Can't wait to see some pictures of them all operating together and sailing in formation.

Impressive.

Kind of surprised there is no SSN included. Perfect opportunity for one of their newer Type 093s. Then again, there could very well be one. Most of the times, nations rarely announce the schedules/activities of their nuclear subs.

Thanks Jeff for these impressive pictures! Yeah I can't wait too! Hopefully there will be a shot of the whole group with some J15s in the air:)

In any case, I'll closely monitor CJDBY and other sites as well as Weibo. If there's any pics I'll post ASAP

Thanks! That would be great. I hope we see a lot of good pics of them sailing and operating together during these exercises.

Yeah, considering how tight lipped the PLAN are about submarines and especially SSNs this lack of announcement is no surprise.

Heh I'd expect there would be a USN SSN in the area. I wonder if they will practice any ASW drills.

Hehehe...they may do. If they can find it. LOL!

Seriously, in that case, and if they really wanted to play the cat and mouse game, if they have a

Of course all of that cuts both ways and the very reason the US boat would be there would be to tag and collect more data and info on these very vessels. Type 095 already in service, this would be the perfect opportunity to pit it against the A-Team.

If the story is true it'll be the first time Liaoning leave the duckpond for the swimming pool, not open waters yet but things take one step at a time.

As to your question to why no 052C, remember all the available 052C DDGs goes either assigned to the ESF or SSF, NSF is still the most mix-bagged fleet of the 3. In short, this formation is NSF elements, primary serves in riding shotgun role during transit. If to include the 052C from SSF into the mix (if they ain't out at Gulf of Aiden or other assignment elsewhere) it can be very do when the "Liaoning battlegroup" reached South Sea region.

The same thing might be also said for the newer SSNs, as thus far most intel points to they are assigned to the SSF as well. Well you get the idea.

To be honest I'm really excited about this whole thing. The US navy is THE best and THE gold standard in terms of carrier operations and experiences. The Chinese navy can really learn a lot from them even if there aren't many opportunities. And I believe a tense yet not really hostile kind of 'cool confrontation and encounters' with US navy will really help this young carrrier force grow

Oh I doubt 095 is in service, and my rather off hand comment wasn't insinuating the PLAN would seriously seek to play that game with an SSN.

Rather I was wondering out loud (for the future especially), if they might be able to create opportunities to try and detect and find USN SSNs by bringing out liaoning occasionally, because it's virtually guaranteed the USN will try to tail it.

That isn't to say the liaoning would be a sacrificial lamb because there are other missions and training they can do outside of ASW -- you don't need an entire CV and its battle group dedicated to trying to find an SSN that may or may not be tailing you. Nor am I saying there would be a conflict or a serious cat and mouse game if the SSN is detected, for the task would be intended to be to merely try and find the SSN, not force it up or anything.

Anyway I digress.
