Two screenshots from the Chinese "Project 1143.7":

How close are the renderings? They both have JZY-01 and catapults.

In response to both, it is very likely that the actual 001A won't match the renderings too closely.

Just because state media report something or posts a certain picture or rendering does not make all the details of it true -- after all, state media are run by people like any other, and some of the time when they write about certain fresh and new PLA developments they may not be aware of certain details or nuances.

In this case, the inclusion of a few CGI renderings are there probably because they were available online and were thought to be a decent artist's illustration of what the real thing might look like... and not any sort of deliberate "leak" to tell us what 001A will exactly look like down to certain details.

So the renderings that they posted in the video are basically useless, and I strongly caution against reading too much into them, if at all.

The best way to think about state media reporting on PLA matters is that often, certain new details or developments or exercises which are entirely legitimate and exclusive are often posted by them. But at the same time, that does not mean every single news story and every single clip they post will be reflective of a certain development or what not -- sometimes they might just use a random clip or a random rendering because it is convenient. Back in the late 2000s I remember a CCTV clip about the air force and they included a clip from top gun where a fighter was shot down, and it was widely perceived as some sort of misinformation to try and portray a missile test as successful -- when in reality, the crew and reporter working on that particular story probably were either lazy or unable to get the footage of the actual event and thought it would be acceptable to stitch together a movie clip as a representative fill in.
Once we understand that fundamental logic, then it makes interpreting state media segments on PLA matters to be a much easier task.

Not sure why the project 1143.7 would be that interesting for China if it was a typical Soviet carrier with a massive missile load in mind.

New layout, own Chinese subsystems from propulsion over catapults to radars and sensors.

The Liaoning also have the hull of ex soviet Varjag, but I'm pretty sure with new radars and sensors, new interieur and so on, only not sure about the engines ....

You all should know by know that commenting on a woman's look on a military forum is not appropriate unless it's in the member's club room on some related thread.

I would certainly echo this assessment, but even go one step further: the majority of the Chinese news media reports and discussions on Chinese defense equipment development are no more authentic or authoritative than the internet media, including this one. In fact, I would say SDF is in many aspects has better analysis based on the crowd wisdom and candid discussions.

The background and context to this state-of-affairs and observation are the competition and pressure for eyeballs, viewing rates, and clicks. As much as there are so many projects and developments in Chinese defense arena in recent years, there are relatively scarce official information and announcements. These results in the media speculating, rumoring, copying and recycling all kinds of news or not so new news. The defense-related news and reports are enormously popular in China. By one account, some of the leading news apps get one-third of their hits from military-related news. The traditional news outlets such as TV, while more restrained in what they can report, often resort to commenting on "foreign media reports," which usually get their reports from Chinese media, conventional or internet, in the first place. You also have the relatively few familiar talking heads appearing in all kinds of talk shows as "military experts." They're either not authorized or simply don't have much inside knowledge to disclose any real information. For example, I have watched one "naval expert" who appears as regular guest in at least half-dozen shows recently still claims that the 001A under construction in Dalian would either use steam or gas turbine as propulsion power. You get the feeling that these people are just trying to fill up the time.

So, the advice to people is that please do not take anything that appears in Chinese media as any leaks or new information without analysis. They're mostly not.
