The development of the Type 002 is shrouded in mystery.
We are too impatient. The Chinese have certainly a well-functioning intelligence. So they will spy on what problems the Americans have with their new catapults and how they solve them. Then they will build and test their own sea-based system. The land-installations serve basic research.

The word 'spy' is rather derogative. Aircraft carriers and their associated difficulties on systems eg catapults are well documented in reputed journals and magazines and on the web. China does not need to 'spy' on Americans. China has a pool of intelligent and devoted scientists and engineers to research into any systems designs for their ships, aircraft and rockets and military hardware and software!

Yup a lot of those people are clueless combine with brain wash by clueless western press who keep harping on "Chinese stealing technology" narrative.When the truth is that there so many Chinese engineer educated in the west get their knowledge openly from doing basic research for their respective university. latter on when they go home they improve on their finding with state funding

Neat. These high res photos with the catapult trenches at a relatively complete state of construction lends a lot of credence to the idea that they operate off different mechanisms (EM vs steam).
Not to mention the support infrastructure around each trench appears to be different as well.

I suspect that this construction will be complete by year's end, at the latest, and we will have photographic proof of it from satellites some months after.

There appears to be more political support for EMALS than steam catapult. I suspect a reason for the competition is to allow EMALS team to catch up. This should shut the mouth of those opposing EMALS, as their biggest argument is that steam catapult being "further along" in development.

On the 1st picture brought by By78 ... ...

Are those Catapult ( possibly EMAL ) setup on top of the Ski Ramp on both end of the runway ?? If it is true, then it is very innovative.

===

In early March 2016, during the 13th * 5 year Roadmap event, all the PLA Delegations without a doubt heard clearly Pres. XI speech ... ...
Pres. XI utter the words ( ChuangXin = Innovate ) more than 36 times.

Pres. XI said ( ChuangXin = Innovate ) is the PLA Core Power. He asked that ( ChuangXin ) must be implemented on all PLA activities ( from Kitchen Personnels selection all the way to the Software and Hardware selections ). --- Pres. XI said innovative Talents inside PLA must be given the opportunity to display their breakthrough thinking 24x365.

The ( PLA Chief Designers and Super Star Scientists such as PLAN * Mr MA Wei Ming ) said he is now absolutely empowered to be continuously bold and to be extremely innovative on everything.

Then, I said to myself that the upcoming CV-17 will be equipped by EMAL Catapult and Ski Ramp at the same time.

===

The benefits of using EMAL Catapult system are far outweigh the conventional Steam catapult. EMAL Catapult are ... ...

1) consuming much less space
2) efficient variable power output can be adjusted on the fly based on each Aircraft Take-off weight
3) much faster and easier to maintain and repair
4) 40% more aircraft launching per 5 minute interval
5) huge 80% weight reduction
6) can be repeatedly use way much longer
7) higher efficiency much less wasted energy
8) no need to install dedicated Water Desalination plant
9) ... ...so on and so forth ... ...

And, if the EMAL Catapults are down, then CV-17 can still launch Aircraft using the Ski Ramp.
