The Liaoning also have the hull of ex soviet Varjag ...
We could observe, that 001A also has the same hull with the same machinery spaces, the same hangar as Varyag. The island and the bulbous bow seems to get minor changes. A quite conservative development, no revolution, only evolution.

The most interessting question for me is, which carrier will be the first with catapults. My guess from the beginning in the year 2005 is, Liaoning will emerge with a waist cat after her first major overhaul. Second opportunity, 001A is launched with preparation for a waist cat and will get it after the first major overhaul. Third opportunity and for me a surprise, 001A will be launched already with a cat. The last and most conservative opportunity is, that 002 is the first Chinese carrier with a cat. Remember, the aircraft for cat-launch still missing.

Would be fun to see the ulyanikov sovjet carrier class being build by chinese in a modern jacket

That wont happen. China doesnt have acess to the KN-3 nuclear reactors that would have propelled the ulyanovsk. 002 will have conventional propulsion, i think.

I'd bet that 002 would be powered by 1 or 2 pebble bed nuclear reactors

No.... 002 will definitely be a conventionally powered aircraft carrier.

"003" as some have called it, will almost definitely be nuclear... however it is still over a decade away at least.

my guess is that China may eventually build two more conventional carriers plus Liaoning. after CV17 enters service in 2019, Dalian may build another one CV19, before that Jiangnan may start to build CV18, which will be nuclear powered and may use the EM launch system.

the reason is that it will take a long time for CV18 to become operable, PLAN need CV19 to fill the gap.

the gap in power projection.
That will depend on what kind of power projection China is seeking. If it is the kind of American global projection, there is a gap, a big one, but I don't think China is looking for that. If it is protection of marintime trade, I don't really see a gap because AC is not a must for that purpose although it is a good addition.

In my view, any country using navy force to block sea lane of a major power would easily escalate to a major war, and the war does not need to be limited at the spot of blockade, there are many places to counter that blockade without the need of AC.
