@Jeff Head:
I also think so. As it is the more likely solution.
- China mostly first build two ships, nearly identical, to test new types.
- A catapult in front of the landing deck interferes with the landing operations.
A catapult on the waist isn't that much of an issue -- most CATOBAR carriers of the world have at least one catapult on the waist, and they make it work.
Technically speaking, fitting a catapult or two on the waist of 001A (if it was designed for it) wouldn't really interfere with normal operations that much and could offer substantial additional capability in the ability to launch fixed wing AEW&C and heavier loaded fighters more reliably.
But I also believe 001A won't have catapults -- simply because 001A is meant to be the lower risk carrier compared to 002.
However I am also not too sure just how much logistical commonality 001A will have with Liaoning, for instance, while we broadly know 001A will still be a STOBAR carrier, we also expect it will have some improvements, so we don't know how many of Liaoning's major subsystems will be reused... will they use same aircraft elevator and munitions elevator designs, same internal mechanisms for the hangar, same internal arrangement of rooms and spaces, same combat system, etc...
