The research and development of electromagnetic drive technology may be at the present time in a state, which serves both the maglev train and the catapult technology. Just basic research. Then test plants are not in the size in which they fit later times in a ship.

I personally believe (like plawolf) that the second indigenous carrier will be a CATOBAR design, mostly because of how the rumours of past years have played out.
Uh...in my post, the "'two" includes the Liaoning. so:

1. The Liaoning STOBAR
2. An improved Liaoning STOBAR
3. An indigenous CATOBAR

whether china is first going for the steam or EMAL catapult also depends on their nuclear propulsion. generally everyone thinks EMAL = nuclear .

so how far is china's nuclear propulsion for aircraft carrier being going? we haven't had any rumours or leaked info about that.

Like I said above, I think it's quite an accepted idea that JN's carrier would likely be CATOBAR, the question is whether its EM or steam.

It would be nice to know whether the speculated catapult test facility at Shanghai, and the new foundations at the Navy's existing naval-air test facility really are both catapults or not, and if they are, whether they are EM or steam.

That would obviously shed quite a bit of info as to the likelihood of 002 using EM or steam cats

What really matters isn't "nuclear", but electrical current. EMALS are very hungry for current, so if they don't have generators that can supply all the current the catapult will need they'll have to get very clever with electrical systems design.

thats why i thought only nuclear propulsion can provide all that current needed for the EM catapult.

I think the assumption that EMALS must require nuclear propulsion is blatantly illogical, as IEPS from conventional propulsion could provide sufficient current for EMALS as well.
