I think that mock superstructure is intended for testing the electronics and internal layout of the Liaoning. Liaoning is still a work in progress, testing all aspects of carrier design and operating practices with which the Chinese had no prior experience. She is far from truly operational, if she ever would be, and that mock island is supporting her.

The new indigenous carrier will take about 5 years to complete. I bet long before 5 years is up, that mock superstructure would be dismantled and replaced with a different mockup to test the same for the new carrier.

I personally doubt if that island will be too heavily modified in future -- I think they built it according to Liaoning's original island specifications, but they might consider it excessive to change the island's geometry and size to be accurate with the islands of 001A and 002 as they are built.

More likely is that the island may feature some superficial external changes and the adding of some external structures and test sensors, without resorting to changing the foundation and overall structure of the island itself.

"According to military researchers and sources in the shipbuilding sector, the second aircraft carrier is being constructed at the Jiangnan Shipyard on Changxing island outside of Shanghai."
an AJW exclusive, or yet another rumor about the second indigenous Chinese carrier?

Well we've been speculating that for months if that has been going on, and it was somewhat predicted even years ago...

However solid evidence has yet to emerge, nor do they present any, so I think in this case they are just repeating what we've already considered, at little cost to themselves.

Wasn't it agreed upon that the Chinese are only building one vessel at the moment?
