There is ever the possiblity that she will not return to Qingdao but goes South to winter in SCS. That would be a really long time at sea.

IMO only a mock up ... a quite crudely build (in the details).

By the way :)

Defense spokesman dismisses aircraft carrier explosion report

BEIJING, Oct. 30
Reports in foreign media of an explosion on board China's Liaoning aircraft carrier did "not conform with the facts", Defense Ministry spokesman Yang Yujun told a regular press conference Thursday.
Yang declined to answer questions about the construction of new aircraft carriers.
"As for the development and construction of China's new aircraft carriers, I have no further information to offer," Yang said.
China's aircraft carrier, the 300-meter Liaoning, was commissioned in September 2012.

Hmm...IMHO, he was pretty careful with his wording.

So, the facts of the incident in western outlets could well be wrong, but he did not say that there was not an incident with the propuslion.

I beleive something did happen, but that the crew aboard the Lianoing repaired it at sea, and the carrier continued with its exercises.

Not sure if that is just for towing vehicle or something. Catapult tow bar on US carriers seems to be lower and more robust looking.

There is also a trail bar that held the aircraft in place while the catapult builds up steam pressure and releases once sufficient pressure/force has been reached

I think in older design the trail bar actually breaks at a weaker section and is for single use per launch (?).

Well I've found two pics here that shows the difference between the original landing gear layout and the new one:

Maybe they really are trying out on a cat variant.

Maybe they are still at the stage where they are figuring where everything will fit into the new plane.
