...So no, I don't think there is any evidence there that liaoning is back at port. As before, I think the most reliable way of knowing when it is back is through spotters and their photos.

Agreed, until I found this over at the CDF even if I don't agree with this report's conclusion of being "combat ready" or it is again a false report based on this film above with wrong conclusions drawn from it:confused::

Military expert: "Liaoning" carrier to be capable of combat soon

(Source: China Military Online) 2014-10-27

BEIJING, October 27 (ChinaMil) -- China's first aircraft carrier "Liaoning" has returned to the home port in Qingdao after completing the half-year maintenance. CCTV recently revealed the latest image of the "Liaoning" taskforce, in which the aircraft carrier was sailing with at least eight surface vessels and submarines in formation.

Yin Zhuo, a military expert, said in an interview with CCTV that the aircraft carrier "Liaoning" had completed carrier training and taskforce deployments and entered taskforce training. Another military expert Li Li noted that it will pave the way for China’s real aircraft carrier in the future.

According to Yin Zhuo, the main tasks of the aircraft carrier "Liaoning" are tests and training at the moment, and it isn't a complete combat carrier yet due to insufficient ship-borne aircraft. The appearance of multiple surface vessels actually indicated a training taskforce, including air defense destroyer, frigate and nuclear submarine, which is what a future aircraft carrier taskforce will consist of.

Yin Zhuo also noted that the beginning of taskforce training of the "Liaoning" indicated that its battle post configuration and carrier training have been completed.

Even though ship-borne aircraft are not at full strength yet, they have carried out such training subjects as maximum-weight takeoff and landing, emergency landing and flight under complicated climate conditions, indicating a high level of ship-borne aircraft training.

Besides, the first batch of qualified ship-borne aircraft pilots who have passed the appraisal are now serving as coaches in various troop units, and aircraft carrier “Liaoning” will soon be capable of full-equipped combat.

Aircraft carrier "Liaoning" started an over-five-month-long overhaul at a shipyard this April, the third of its kind so far.

According to Li Li, "Liaoning" is a testing carrier whose task is to test future aircraft carrier technologies and various types of equipment. “Aircraft carrier "Liaoning" is a step stone. With its continuous tests, modifications and improvements, it will pave the way for our real aircraft carrier in the future.”

Well it says the carrier will soon be "combat ready".

I think that means having a normal sized airwing and enough qualified pilots to fly them (and escorts)

Given recent J-15 production, I think it is feasible within the next six months to one year.

also, the article is quite misleading, as the "CCTV footage" of the liaoning sailing in formation with multiple ships is actually from earlier this year, when we had those nice pictures of liaoning and those escorts. It seems only now that they've released a few snippets of video.

However the article is fairly right on everything else. The taskforce/escorts Liaoning sailed with earlier this year/late last year was definitely a "training taskforce," and PLAN would've spent that time learning to coordinate that many ships together in various contingencies. Even without an airwing onboard, they would've learned a lot of lessons, probably enough to develop some basic doctrines and have an "IOC" Liaoning CSG within the "soon" timeframe described.

The big question is still whether Liaoning is still at sea or not. The video posted by franklin shows a clip where Liaoning was at its base in qingdao, but I'm not sure how recently that was taken. Certainly, I think if liaoning had remained there for any amount of time we would've had independent photos of it by now.

Also, we're all wondering what Liaoning has done out at sea for the last few weeks. Is it training with various ships, is it training new pilots day in and day out, is it putting on all its new J-15s and giving the deck crew a good work out? We don't know.

Overall though, this article is fairly accurate in its assessment imo.

O.k. ... again a fine analysis !

By the way the most interesting thing for me to know would be: were there also (finally) serial J-15s involved during these recent trails or once again "only" the prototypes ?

Yes, that is the big question for me as well.

I think the control of Liaoning's various outings by the military shows how much we haven't seen.

It took nearly 10 months since when the first photos of the taskgroup was released for us to get a few seconds of video, and CCTV footage is still playing the same few seconds of footage from the initial test flights in 2011-2012.

Of course, we've had some nice footage from those PR/recruitment videos but any observer can tell they're keeping the good stuff hidden away.

You'd think with all this "secrecy" surrounding Liaoning you'd think China is the only country on this planet operating a carrier. There's no secret or new techniques in operating a CV. However if the PLAN wants to keep it's cards close to it's vest..so bet it!

We all know what the best way to operate a Aircraft Carrier is. Don't we?!..and I'm sure the PLAN does also.

I remain convinced that the photos and videos with the subs are from the latest sea trials. The only other time we saw Liaoning with a escort fleet was in january of this year in the South China Sea were there where no subs involved. Now the first report about Liaoning and her escort fleet was on 20 or 21 october. And I believe that is also the day that the Liaoning returned to port in Qingdao.

Here are some more videos. In the first video posted on 21 october on Youtube you can see the Liaoning docking at Qingdao! Its posted on 21 october on Youtube so the video could be more than a day old meaning from either 19 or 20 october.

No there was plenty of submarine action from that mission we saw at the start of this year, the formation and nature of the ships looks much the same they are showing a reclip of the old formation sailing we saw from Jan 2014 and nothing new

Plus Type 071 LPD is there too from Jan 2014 I doubt they added the LPD in again in for the formation training

Unless that is we see some clear shots of some different ships in the coming days

@franklin

The problem is that we don't know when the footage of liaoning docking at qingdao was taken, as I said. Nowhere are we given a reliable time stamp saying liaoning had returned on X day. More importantly, if she really had returned to base we shoul have had independent phoo confirmation by now. The fact that she has been out at sea this long means everyone would be keeping quite a close eye on her return.

And like I've also said, the video clip of the task group is quite obviously from the exercise late last year. Asif's phoo demonstrates it.

Without doubt, in the first video we see an oil fired boiler.

But that doesn't mean:
A: the clip with the boiler was taken while liaoning was at Dock
B: if it was taken at dock, we don't know when it was taken. Knowing CCTV and PLA it might have been taken months ago.

---

We always have to look at CCTV reports and the clips they show with an air of skepticism. More often than not they inadvertently misrepresent things either through lazy editing, or simply lack of video that has been cleared for public viewing making them have to work with months or years old footage.
Like I said, in that CCTV video above, they have clips from the trial early this year as well as some of the original prototype test flight footage from over two years ago!!

---

We should wait for independent verification of liaoning returning to qingdao before leaping to conclusions. We've used independent sources to confirm everything else about the PLAN, and official video only gives us occasional photos of the interior of ships or during exercises and deployments, but they aren't reliable at telling us when a ship has left or arrived at base let alone the construction and commissioning of new ships. We use independent sources for all that so I see no reason why we would change our standards in this case
