Is the Liaoning not going to use Ka-31 as AEW? Don't understand why China bought it if it wasn't going to use it on the Liaoning.

They probably bought it as a back up in case Z-18J encountered problems. Ka-31 will still be useful as backup AEW for liaoning, and may be useful for future LHAs, or even as AEW for a SAG as it can fit in any hangar that can fit Ka-27.

"Foreign-designed?" J-15s? I could believe there was some non-Chinese technical assistance by hook or crook, but "foreign-designed" is wrong. The Defense News could use more Deinos on their staff and less Windell Minnicks.

The article reads that the J-15 is based on the Russian Su-33, which it is, no one denies it is a Chinese fighter, and of course every one could use more Deino's.

Yes, strange i don't see in all recent reports the Ka-31 ? 9 based to Ningbo-Zhuangqiao.

I don' t think usefull for a SAG, AEW are used by CV for lead CAP and strike misions.

Nope...we've seen very little from CV-16 in the last year or so.

Actually since the first arrested landings and ski ramp launches two years ago not much. I was very excited when the first photos and videos were released. I even commented on how professional the flight deck crew appeared. I was impressed!

We still have not seen any sort of flight deck drills. Even an aircraft being fueled with a rigid (Charged) hose. I'm not sure bet the most aircraft we've seen on deck is three. And yes I know the J-15 is still in it's infant stage.

As I stated some time ago the PLAN CV program seems to be stagnated. Why is that? I sure don't know.

Sorry for being misleading or at least not clear enough, I meant are there any news on the CV-17 / CV-001A ??? ... or even of this test-module ??

It seems indeed - like You said - as if the PLAN CV program has to be stagnated. :(

i never expected to see new carriers built right after liaoning anyway. its more prudent to learn from liaoning's ops and its usage and incorporate that knowledge into new ships. Even if we don't see a carrier building by 2016 i wouldn't call it slow or stagnating. If one wants to do it properly, it takes time.

I find it hard to believe that even our more "philosophical members" are not disappointed that progress has been "leisurely to say the least, if it were truly "stagnated" we would not have seen her painted and dolled up and returning to Dalian. I had all but given up on the lovely J-20 until the imposition of the East China Sea ADIZ, and if I weren't lazy and on a schedule, I would find a post or two where I predicted that would "re-vitalize" the J-20 project. Shortly thereafter we see the upgraded 2011 ana 2012, which had no doubt been in the "oven" the whole time, wouldn't surprise me to see 2013 any day as the Russians have completed 5 prototypes, and I do believe there is more than a little desire to "match/surpass the Russians, but the real point is that although the aircraft were "cloistered" there was progress being made.

I would also remind that the Chinese are not ready to go "balls to the wall" against the USN, and doubt that they even find that frenetic pace admirable, or desirable. They prefer to be seen as the careful, "shrewd dude", making the most of a little, I'm sure when we least expect it, we will have another "rockstar roll-out", to pump a little excitement into the populace????

Maybe even a dozen or more J-15s operating off the deck???? anyone else care to comment?????

I'm disappointed PLAN is taking their sweet time and we Sinodefense fans don't get plethora of news and pictures, but I'm not disappointed because we all knew it would be a decades long endeavor for PLAN to master deck aviation, carrier tactics, and logistical support. On the other hand, Sinodefense fans want more eye candy!

As often is the case with Chinese military developments, things look slow until some news breaks, and then we get a rush of information followed by another lull. I wouldn't be overly hasty in reading too much about the pace of these programs on the day to day basis. We have a good number of dates for when we should be seeing things happen. Let's assess once we get to those dates and nothing happens.

Eventually I would like to see China have 3 x CSG and 3 x ARG/MEU

This would mean 1 of each is deployed at anyone time while one of each is in work up and 1 of each is in overhaul/refit

Those would be a good naval force for China a CSG sailing somewhere and a ARG/MEU also somewhere in the oceans it would provide so much more security and stability in the regions of operations
