I am guessing the 052C type radar panels will be replaced by 052D type ones?
Good question...and its possible. But I kind of doubt it.

It probably involves a lot more than just the panels of phased arrays.

My guess is there is a complete new system associated with it...or at the least, a significant upgrade of the existing system.

So, they may do it...then again, it just depends on how extensive a refit it involves, and whether they view that higher end capability necessary for the carrier.

What's the status of C6? Does it have it's PARs installed yet? If it is still waiting for PARs, that could make a more compelling argument to put a set of 052D PARs on Liaoning.

I don't understand why a ship that has been commissioned less than 2 years and only been at sea for 146 days since. Needs a 6 months refit. But now that they are doing it i hope that the Liaoning will recieve the DK-10 missile system (similar to the ESSM of the US.) This will give the Liaoning an extra layer of protection. The DK-10 could attempt to intercept incoming missile's from 40 to 50km out. Then 10km out there is the FL-3000N RAM. 3 to 1km out there is the Type 1030 CIWS. And at less than 1km out there are flares, shafts and ECM protection.

Highly doubtful.

I expect that they will be cleaning her lower hull, making numerous adjustments to existing systems based on her commissioned time at sea and her pre-commission voyages, and fixing problems they identified in that same time frame.

I believe any addition of significant new systems would occur much later at some kind of major mid-life overhaul ten or more years from now.

But...that's just my opinion and time will tell.

It would be neat for the Liaoning to get the new radar and a mid range AA missile...but I just do not see it happening right now.

I dont think we should see this as a overhaul or mid life upgrade or anything like that

What they are doing are adjustments and improvements based on the data and information they have collected from the days at sea cus let's be honest this is China's first large surface combatant and there is a lot to learn here for them

There is plenty of things that they could be working on and things they can only learn by sending the ship to sea

Any weapons modifications or any new radars is out of the question because it was outfitted just 2 years ago with full battle ready equipment no way they are going to change it

What they will do is improve the deficiencys they have found during the time at sea

I bet when this ship comes back it will be full steam ahead and carrier air wing will formidable and cleared to land on the carrier

Cus as of now no production J15 have been seen landing on the carrier only certain prototypes which again are producing lots and lots of data and information which will be inco-operated onto the new production J15

So it's carrier + air wing integration work right now next year 2015 we see the big sails out and a true carrier formation sailing and more and more J15 qualified and cleared to land on the carrier

All this tells me one thing that is that China is going about its carrier programme like a true carrier programme and I mean the full machine is at work here
