Here's a PLAN fan CG image I found on sina of what the CV-16 strike group may look like. In my experience ships would not steam that close together. They would be this close for a photo op.
Yes, a pic like that would definitely be for a photo op and not for actual operations.

But to me, that sub looks a little too big proportionally.

...so I fixed it.

Yeah I also doubt there's a significant number of planes on this training exercise too.

Although, the captain of the liaoning did say that they've supposedly trained with 36 aircraft onboard... But I find that rather hard to believe at this stage. Who knows, maybe we'll be surprised once we get photos.

Perhaps they trained in deck and hanger proceedures with large number of mobile mock ups. There have been photos showing mock up of J-15s on the roof top carrier deck facsimile the Chinese built.

I doubt the Liaoning can carry 27 Flankers. China operates a carrier with one of the smallest hangar decks in the World even smaller then the one on the 42000 ton Charles De Gaulle. And at the same time China operates the world's biggest deck based fighter the J-15 a Flanker. The Russian Kuznetsov has 14 SU-33's and 4 SU-25's and another 17 helicopters. China maybe able to fit 20 to 24 J-15's and another 12 to 16 helicopters on board.

Liaoning's hanger deck is larger than on the Kuznetsov. The slanted SS-N-19 tubes in the original Kuznetsov design was removes and its space used for enlarging the hanger on the Liaoning, I believe.

No they didn't touched the hanger at all. It is original size. I think that the weapon elevators are just behind the front bulkhead of the hanger. Probably they put something like a mess and crew accommodations there.

Until now we have seen exactly one mock up aircraft. It was first used on the aircraft carrier building and then on Liaoning itself. And I guess, it is still on the ship.

The only place I've read the Russian Kuznetsov's "14 Su-33" count is from wikipedia. I think that is an indication of the total number of operational Su-33s the Russians have, not its capacity. Most of the places I've read say the Kuznetsov class was supposed to top out max at about 50 planes, 24 fixed wing, 26 rotary.

As for the CdG vs Liaoning hangar size, Jeff did a good collection a while ago

So CdG is slightly wider but Liaoning is slightly longer. However from the videos we've seen I think the Liaoning's hangar has been slightly extended (compared to Varyag/Kuznetsov). I'm not sure if that would allow an extra couple of planes to squeeze in, who knows.
Also, plane capacity isn't only dependent on the planes you can squeeze in the hangar, but also the size of your flight deck. Not every plane will be tucked inside. I expect a good portion would be left on the flight deck and rotated in and out of the hangar for maintenance, etc.

The Russians have a total of 19 SU-33 Flanker. And like i said the hangar deck of the Liaoning is 24m² smaller then that of the Charles De Gaulle. I thought there was a discussion back in 2012 after the first landing and take off of the Liaoning that the hangar deck hasn't been enlarged and is the same as the original design.

I believe you are correct. May have been some pics and discussion of the structural innards in that area that prevented it. Anyhow, that's my recollection as well.
