The pilots name is often paintet near the canopy - I think, then it is only one pilot per plane. And the squadron leader has a x00 as tailnumber - then it is only his plane. Plus few additional crews, if flying personal is to be taken sick.

have to be careful looking for names on a jet though, pilot assigned RWO tend to be marked along with the plane captain whose name is on the other. Plane captain basicly is the planes father, her flight crew is just her boyfriend who takes her out from time to time.

I have seen and read nothing that would indicate that she has received anything close to her entire air wing or even one of the two squadrons of J-15s.

To date the most she has gone out with are three J-15s, the same two prototypes and the one painted in PLAN colors.

If she has 4 or more (max of six) J-15s with her on this trip, I would be really excited and hope we see some pictures of the exercises she does with however many J-15s many she carries.

There is already many report from indicated end of year or early jan 2014, a squadron of J-15 will be operational ready. Numerous photo of J-15 being manufacture and officially reported LRP of J-15 has started few months ago with even extensive interview of the chief designer of J-15. It not difficult to comprehend that a squadron of J-15 will arrive soon.

It just like seeing the skip mark on CV-16 during during near commission of CV-16 while many still doubt her of launching and landing planes in her.

How many pilots are there on board a USN carrier ? Is it one pilot per plane or is there some kind of reserve ?

Franklin, the actual number varies however on a US carrier the number of pilots typically is around 120 or so depending on the airwing embarked. Typically 8 or 9 squadrons so anywhere from 110-125 or so actual pilots.
Also not sure what you mean by reserve. Typically an aircrew is assigned to a particular bird. There is 'extra' set of backup or reserved crew is that's what you're implying.

As I said, I have read and seen nothing to indicate that Liaoning has received anything close to her air wing at this time.

As to whether "reports" of people saying they heard something (which is nothing official) that she will receive something by the end of January are true or not, we will not have long to wait.

As I said, I will be happy to see 4-6 J-15s embarked on their current trip.

Yeah I also doubt there's a significant number of planes on this training exercise too.

Although, the captain of the liaoning did say that they've supposedly trained with 36 aircraft onboard... But I find that rather hard to believe at this stage. Who knows, maybe we'll be surprised once we get photos.

I'd love to see the photos of that!

The most J-15s we have seen in photos are three to date.

I can imagine them having had a number of helos in addition to that...but 36 total?

As you said, it's hard to believe.

The proof is in the pudding. I would think if the PLAN had 36 aircraft aboard and training they would show it.

They done plenty of J-15 fly over and touch and go but they never show immediately even after CV-16 liaoning commissioned. I guess we will have to wait abit longer to get that photo of evidence.

Actually there are likely twice as many pilots as aircraft, and sorties are flown by assignment according to mission capa bility, etc, etc,, in reality even though the squadron commander has his "own" bird, it wouldn't be unusual for someone else to fly it. Lt Col. Max Moga, of Joint base Elmendorf/Richardson is flying the last Raptor as the Squadron Commander, I would be most surprised though if he doesn't "share" it with other aircraft commanders, maybe someone else could be more specific. Its obvious that lots of fellows have shared the three J-15s that have been used for carrier quals so far. brat

Yes they have.

But they have shown a lot of videos of those. Both fly overs, touch and goes, landings and take-offs on numerous occasions.

Always, the same two prototype aircraft, with the same aircraft numbers (552 and 553) were used. More recently the third aircraft painted in PLAN colors has been used, aircraft number 554. But that is all to date.

Many, many shots of the flight deck. Shots of the hanger spaces. Always those three aircraft.

That's why I say I will be happy to see four to six aircraft. It would mark a significant increase in the numbers of aircraft they have shown aboard the carrier.

As I said, I believe that the PLAN would show the world pictures of their carrier with 12, or 18, or 36 J-15s on it as soon as they successfully did it. They made a big deal of the first landings and take-offs...and justifiably so. the Chinese people took a lot of pride in that.

I expect they will do the same as soon as they can show a carrier full of aircraft.

There were claims J-15s were in mass production, and if that's so, where are they? What engines are they using?
