Well said by both plawolf and Blackstone. Let's avoid the comparison game and focus on what the thread is about, the PLAN carrier program and the progress they are making.

The Liaoning and her escort is in the South China Sea

China’s first aircraft carrier on Tuesday left for its maiden deep-sea trials in the strategic South China Sea, where it is expected to play a major role amid heightened tensions with its neighbours over disputed islands.

The ‘Liaoning’ left its home port of Qingdao for the South China Sea on a scientific and training mission, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

China is a conducting several experiments on the 57,000-tonne carrier, including testing the new J-15 fighter plane’s operations from its deck.

This is the first time the carrier has embarked on a cross-sea training voyage since it was commissioned into the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Navy in 2012, Liaoning’s Captain Zhang Zheng said. The voyage will test the carrier’s equipment, he said.

The carrier’s crew conducted a series of tests and training drills, including landing and take-off by various aircraft, including the J-15.

The carrier was escorted by two missile destroyers, Shenyang and Shijiazhuang, and two missile frigates, Yantai and Weifang.

The carrier, originally known as Varyag, was bought from Ukraine a decade ago and extensively refurbished before being commissioned in 2012.

Long voyages are necessary for experimentation and training and to test equipment and troops under continuous work and different hydrological and meteorological conditions.

The trials in the South China Sea are a ‘normal arrangement’ in the carrier’s scheduled training, the PLA Navy said as it played down the significance of the voyage at a time when China is locked in maritime disputes with Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia and Brunei.

The carrier’s trials began days after China’s unilateral move to establish an air defence zone over an area including islands in the East China Sea claimed by Japan.

Awesome, it gratifies me to know that Sino Defense continues to be in capable hands, and I am amazed at how kind and gracious this moderator team has been to me personally, and I'm sure to the other fine gentlemen on here as well, one of the reasons I continue to encourage others to join our forum, and to encourage other posters to put their best out here! I never mind asking questions, before I joined Sino Defense I supposed I had a fairly broad understanding of world affairs, but after running Golly's Gauntlet, I realized how "short" I was, but hey, it just gives us a further opportunity to engage a variety of topics. I will say to all my "Sino D Brothers" my best and most sincere wishes for a blessed and happy Thanksgiving to you all, I know that not all of you celebrate the holiday, but I include you each one in my best wishes, and congratualations to you Jeff, a finer and more honest Gentleman, I've yet to know, I certainly hope that one day we will all get together for a real Sino Defense reunion! Keep up the good work gentlemen, now for my Christmas wish, if some of this could migrate over to our sister forum, well, you can always hope?, brat.

Interesting PLAN went with two 051C long-range air defense DDGs instead of two 052Cs or even one of each.

Congrats Jeff.

As to the Indian vs PLAN I have only one thing to add. Everything else aside the biggest difference IMHO is that generally speaking PLAN emulates USN right down to the colored vest!! while the Indian Navy follows the Russian Navy. Since USN is THE Gold standard in carrier operation and naval aviation in general I give advantage to the PLAN.

The ONLY reason PLAN even acquired the Kievs and the Kutnetsov is because USN carriers are NOT for sale except to literally a couple of countries. If they had been for sale you can bet we'll be discussing the refurbishment of the former USS America, Forrestal or Midway etc instead of the former Varyag.

I can say without a doubt that when PLAN commissions their first CATOBAR any USN sailor who has served aboard any US CV or CVN will find himself in very familiar surroundings if you dropped him on board the Chinese carrier and he or she can probably hit the ground running.

How many pilots are there on board a USN carrier ? Is it one pilot per plane or is there some kind of reserve ?
The pilots name is often paintet near the canopy - I think, then it is only one pilot per plane. And the squadron leader has a x00 as tailnumber - then it is only his plane. Plus few additional crews, if flying personal is to be taken sick.

Hmm... I am wondering... has the Liaoning actually receive her full complement of J-15 already? It is not going to look nice if the Liaoning only had a couple of J-15 on her when she enter the disputed sea.

I have seen and read nothing that would indicate that she has received anything close to her entire air wing or even one of the two squadrons of J-15s.

To date the most she has gone out with are three J-15s, the same two prototypes and the one painted in PLAN colors.

If she has 4 or more (max of six) J-15s with her on this trip, I would be really excited and hope we see some pictures of the exercises she does with however many J-15s many she carries.
