This is speculation from some but people are blaming swimming coach Cui Dengrong for using the wrong training tactics. He is the coach of Zhang Yufei and Qin Haiyang. His focus was too much on strength and not enough on aerobics. Its not a coincidence that the other guys who didn't train under him were able to perform more normally.

I heard Pan Zhanle say he concentrated on endurance rather than strength. This endurance training helped in the last part of his sprint races as he had more energy.

If this really is the case, we can only blame the coaching tactics which makes it even more infuriating. We can blame sabotage and drug testing but like I said, the others managed to even get silver.

This is a direct quote from Pan Zhanle after winning gold in the 100 free.

"As far as my daily routine is concerned, I did a lot of aerobics and endurance training to strengthen my push and kick in the final split. We have also adopted a scientific underwater monitoring and analyzing system to review our techniques and strokes, so that we can train better and more effectively,"

Really disappointing results. So many missed golds. I'm wondering whether China will even get over 30 golds at this rate. Forget about beating US, just don't want to come third like 2016.

Last time swimming got 3 golds so it isn't making much difference. But look at stuff like gymnastics where they can't even get one gold.
The medal spread this time is not normal. I started watching the Olympics in 2004 and I don't think I've ever seen one where so many small countries got so many gold medals right from the start before. The US is currently losing to France and Australia! I'm not so pessimistic. We'll see how it happens but it looks like the US got sapped in swimming. If they get sapped again in athletics, they might come up very low as well.
