Biden is playing classic "Good cop-Bad cop" routine with Pelosi-visit to Taiwan.
  • On one hand, Biden is going to lift massive amounts of China Tariffs to fight inflation, opening himself to criticism of "weak on China" by opponents.
  • On another hand, Biden is defacto sending Pelosi, so he can claim to be "tough on China".
  • While on another hand, Biden is publicly saying the visit "not a good idea" because he has a phone call with Xi Jinping in less than 1 week to discuss relations.
So on the whole, Biden can do both (Lift Tariffs, Appear Tough via Pelosi-visit) to appear like he is "Tough Man", but in reality, he is doing "Good cop-Bad cop" routine via Pelosi-proxy for domestic audience purposes.

Zhou Chenming, a researcher from the Yuan Wang military science and technology think tank in Beijing, said the PLA felt it had “not been respected” by Washington in the past few months despite flagging the risks posed by such a visit.
“The PLA is very angry because of the feeling of disrespect from their American counterparts after months of efforts to try to stop Pelosi’s Taiwan trip,” Zhou said.

I won't put any attention to somebody talking about "respect" in geopolitics.

Nowadays, there are lots of people making voices about anything. First of all, who is the person being quoted? Secondly, which PLA is unhappy? Thirdly, if (and I believe) PLA knew their job (beat the enemy by raw force) they would not give a dime to enemy's "respect".

What is "respect" in situation of life and death anyway? Killing by stabbing the back, poisoning or head-chopping are all equal and effective means. There is no need to be respected, nor anybody to respect.

We are officially not at war with America. There is supposed to be boundaries between sovereign states, that's what makes a civilized world community.

The way of acting, testing boundaries, is like Germany in 1939. Someone must put their foot down at some point.

Respect is in the diplomacy domain during peace time. It should not be a concern of the military who should only plan what to do in a war. My point was about the SCMP article about PLA's "feeling disrespected".
