Why there is so much copium in this thread? I always speak highly of China (you can check my post history, lol) but let's not pretend that the government is flawless. Their soft power policies are an obvious example of that - this tennis player issue blew up largely because of shoddy PR work, that's it: CGTN's response was hilariously bad and only made everything worse. Similarly, the idol crackdowns dealt a heavy blow to the Chinese entertainment which actually started taking ground in other countries - from Chinese dramas to Chinese shows (e.g. survival show Youth with You 2 was very popular with international viewers, including other Asian countries, and attracted a lot of attention towards the Chinese entertainment & soft power), because of heavy-handed actions. There are plenty of other options to address the underlying issues like overspending and crimes among celebrities without shooting yourself in the leg. Another example is how China right now is damaging its own gaming scene - from cybersport (China is currently the strongest e-Sports nation but the heavy restrictions will drain the future talent pool) to game studios which, again, were getting huge internationally especially in mobile gaming. Instead of cracking down on a specific money-drain genre of gacha (that shit needs to be banned worldwide IMO), they just smashed the whole market. The inability to address the flaws will make us like those Jai Hindus omnipresent on YT and Quora.

Smaller countries will obviously lag behind in hard power compared to giants like the US and China, their soft power has nothing to do with that. In fact, without soft power, it is likely that both South Korea & Japan would have even weaker political and economic standing because soft power boosts both whether you like it or not, especially for so-called democracies. And yes, the success of K-Entertainment is helping Asians all over the world - from finally being more vocal on anti-Asian racism to boosting perceptions of Asians (Hollywood does the same for Caucasians, which is why you have those West-worshipping Asians even in countries that got bombed to the ground by their beloved West). Another example is "Paris syndrome" - a rather mundane & dirty city that got a romantic wrapping and was sold to millions of Asians, who then spend tons of money on tourism there.

Sorry for the rant but I really don't see why so many people are vehemently opposed to China having soft power and getting better at PR. Why act as if soft & hard power somehow cancel each other out? It is a strawman argument. You can have both, the US is an example of that, China can have that as well. No one is saying that China should prioritize soft power over hard power, people are asking not to neglect it like it's happening now. The argument that "China doesn't care" also does not hold, because otherwise, the government would not create those global media outlets\branches like CGTN, Global Times, etc., and would not expand Confucius Institutes & other things (like hosting Chinese cultural events, etc.).

Soft power matters a lot, no one can deny it.

The geopolitical realities have changed dramatically and China cannot afford to live in a cocoon. Chinese companies are starting to capture global markets and China’s Belt and Road Initiative encompasses projects in 130 countries. All these grand plans are dependent on China’s soft power. When people like your country, they eagerly buy your products, visit your country and spend money, learn your language and culture, defend your country, and treat your fellow citizens nice when the latter travel or live abroad. Politicians around the world will also line up to meet with your leader and make deals. Basically, life is a lot easier when you’re popular and loved.

Consider how many people of Chinese heritage in Hong Kong are brainwashed to hate China. Obviously, the Chinese leadership didn’t bother to look at what the heck Hong Kong’s youth were learning in schools and the media. Similarly, if China had good PR skills, a majority of people in Taiwan would want to unite with China.

This is the beauty of soft power.

The smart thing for China would be to modify its “Made in China 2025” strategy to include the urgent development of soft power and positive image.

Chinese state media like CGTN, Xinhua News, China Daily and Global Times have gotten better in the last two years. They are hiring talented TV journalists, making lots of short and informative videos, being active on Twitter etc. Female TV anchor Liu Xin brings intellect, fact-based journalism, and social media savviness; and JingJing Li‘s bubbly personality and smartness appeal to younger audience. However, China needs hundred more such influencers.

Chinese media are also starting to leverage new foreign voices such as Daniel Dumbrill, Jerry-the-cyclist, and Cyrus Janssen. This is extremely important, since positive opinions from non-Chinese are more impactful (just like in personal relations if you want to impress a girl, the best way is to have someone else tell her how awesome you are). Another excellent example is Kishore Mahbubani an author and diplomat from Singapore who has done more for China’s image than anyone else over the years. China should cultivate the goodwill of hundreds, if not thousands, of such people.

Chinese foreign ministry officials like Hua Chunying and ambassadors have started fighting back on Twitter in the last few months. We can see that they are being effective, since western journalists are whining about China’s new “wolf warrior diplomacy.”

In the next phase, China must develop journalists, analysts, authors, artists, photographers and moviemakers who focus on other countries and cultures as well as neutral topics that would have global appeal like BBC’s documentaries, for example.

There are 400+ billionaires and 5 million millionaires in China. They could establish a massive private fund to start journalism & film schools, establish think tanks, hire journalists, and pay bloggers and social media influencers around the world. If that sounds crazy, guess what, that’s exactly what the west does.

Chinese government and corporations should be willing to spend significant amount of efforts, money and time on the soft power campaign. Chinese netizens should also be far more active on social media. Perhaps due to political history and cultural factors, there may be resistance to embrace, learn, and invest in this extroverted art of information war. But there’s no choice it’s time for China to evolve and adapt.

It looks like Xi Jinping is starting to understand the urgency of the situation but I don't really see any change :

The episode of Peng Shuai shows that they are still incompetent in the propaganda war and in PR
Someone who gets it.

Just stumbled across this one:

Manila Bulletin 2021/11/15

Presidential aspirant and Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP) standard-bearer Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr. is leading the way in the latest Social Weather Stations (SWS) Presidential survey conducted October 20 to 23.

The latest Presidential preference survey released by the social research firm SWS showed Marcos leading all the Presidential aspirants. The survey was commissioned by Stratbase ADR Institute Inc.

The former lawmaker got 47 percent of the votes, while Vice-President Leni Robredo was a far second with 18 percent. Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno checked in at third place with 13 percent. Getting the other votes were Senators Manny Pacquiao (9%), Panfilo “Ping” Lacson (5%) and Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa (5%), respectively.

Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos, Jr.jpg

Based on this picture, without learning the true background, I will guess that he's of a Chinese descent, partially or fully.

@ansy1968 bro -- Bongbong leads with so high margin... is this surveyor a credible entity? Or does this survey result reflect the contemporary political trend?

Given the amount of hard power China has achieved over the last 40 years, it should have a lot more soft power by now.

Other Asian countries should already be in China’s orbit given its similarities in culture, geographic proximity, and economic interdependence. Yet that hasn’t happened.

In order for China to obtain real soft power other than just economic admiration, it needs to comprehensively surpass the West, especially the US. That’s going to take a long while, if ever.

And if given a choice between well governed Liberal Democracy and Communism one party rule, most people of the world would probably choose the former, including many Chinese people.

If they got shut down, I think it will be PR win for China, there is nothing to lose, but at least China is trying to voice its opinions. You seem to suggest China not even need trying to do public relations to present better image of China to the world.

Well maybe I am naive, common prosperity will be just a dream then. I thought we are all just human who will work together and advance the world, if we need to compete then just compete healthily. No servants no masters.
If you are living in the west, more specifically, living in the U.S. educated there and has lived there for long time then you ought to be familiar with that country's so-called "Founding Fathers" debating and proposing for the need to ratify the proposed constitution of the new Republic a.k.a. U.S.A. one of the most famous results of that debate was the essay produced in the Federalist papers 51 -60 "If men were angels, no government would be necessary. ... In framing a government which is to be administered by men over men, the great difficulty lies in this: you must first enable the government to control the governed; and in the next place oblige it to control itself."

What you're view of mankind and for our future cooperation living in peace and harmony is nothing but a pipe dream. Ambitions, avarice, hubris and other human frailties will always be a part of us and nothing in the foreseeable horizon that shows these human traits are ever going to be erased even with the arrival or ubiquitous use of A.I.

Religions, cultures, will play determinant factors in shaping coexistence and potential conflicts as witnessed in the preceding milleium and succeeding centuries down to the present day. Unless you can change the nature of people then I say good luck to your dreams.

As I said, we need to agree to disagree. You have personal preferences whether China needs to improve its PR or not, and I do too. I am still not convinced with all your points that China does not need to improve its public relations as so far China did the opposite of what you suggest. I already see that China is keep improving its public relations, like going global with CGTN or CCTV. Many reporters from those medias also creating youtube/twitter accounts to voice their opinions to create China's image. Chinese companies also inviting many foreigners to many cities in China and to promote Chinese cities in the youtube channel.

As the case if youtube/twitter got shutdown, China can start to promote from TikTok or maybe WeiBo can go global too, like DouYin/TikTok.
Because you have this strong desire or assumptions that if China only acts accordingly a.k.a. abide and follow the U.S. command China too can enjoy being liked and admired by white people and Chinese people like you who lives in the west (if you're Chinese) wouldn't find it aggravating or even stressed out living in the west. If China can only leave Taiwan alone and give up the island thereby allowing the U.S. and her allies to station troops, missiles, and even nukes while China does nothing but smile and accept the events in a fetal position. Hey, at least white people will like me and am not being demonized in every western media including YouTube especially from folks like Asianboss and those 2 losers that sh..s on China like their lives depend on it. China should also allow Tibet to separate, allow India to encroach and settle into Chinese territories and shouldn't do anything about it if it wants to be liked and to ensure people like you will have this warm fuzzy feelings of comfort. How about giving up the Chinese claims in the South China Sea thereby allowing every bogus claimants to have a feast which will essentially further isolate China and will hamper it's ability to properly defend itself in the future if it awakens from the sheer stupidity being proposed here. How about allowing the CPC to be displaced and be destroyed ushering the new and improved chaos 3.0 only this time the west will ensure that it'll balkanize China into different countries to ensure that it'll never rise again as a potential challenger to American and western way of life. All these changes China must do in order for it to be liked and admired by the very people you seem to want to placate and for you to feel warm and fuzzy about being liked. These are the realities on the ground nothing short of these key things happening where you'll see China being liked to your satisfaction am sorry to say.
