The United States has shown a keen interest in having India acquire the advanced F-35 fighter jet, a sentiment confirmed by an Indian Air Force (IAF) official during Aero India 2023.
The U.S. was not only interested in selling the F-35 to India but also in integrating India into the F-35 global supply chain. This move would have positioned India as a key player in the production and maintenance of one of the world's most advanced fighter jets.

I wonder what happened... also are they gonna blame Russia for this ?
The Su-30MKI requires a more reliable and powerful engine, which India cannot produce without Russian permission due to intellectual property rights. Russia has offered the AL-41FP engine, but it is too expensive. India has modified the existing AL-31FP engine using indigenous components to increase reliability and thrust, but these improvements are still insufficient.

India won't buy any fighter jets from the USA because Pakistan is a major ally of the USA, and the USA would never allow these jets to be used against Pakistan. India wants a stealth fighter jet to carry out precision strikes on terror hideouts in Pakistan; Rafales were purchased for this purpose. The Tejas MK2, equipped with BrahMos missiles, will serve the same purpose.

If earning profit is the motive of the USA, then offering the F-35 to India makes sense. The Indian Air Force would need 350 F-35s to replace the existing Su-30 fleet of 272 and to reach the sanctioned strength of 45 squadrons. This is a significant number that would generate a substantial amount of money for the USA.

The US is desperate to contain China, but not yet desperate enough to sell the F-35 to India. I think they will eventually push for the sale just a matter of when. I can see the scenario playing out similarly with Tejas and Rafale where the AMCA struggles in development and India procures F-35s late.

I don't think Pakistan is a major ally of the US anymore. The US would never sell the F-35 to Pakistan. I only see Indians using that talking point.
