The Tejas MK1A is 1000 kg lighter than the Tejas MK1, but the targeted weight has not yet been achieved, Tejas is still overweight Further weight reductions are expected with additional modifications. The current GE F-404 engine in the Tejas will eventually be replaced by a more powerful, indigenously developed engine. The payload carrying capacity of the Tejas is projected to should be more than 6 tons, with a combat range of 1000 kilometers in the upcoming blocks.
I swear I read this 20 years ago.

Chinese fighter jets used Russian engines for decades before getting replaced by Chinese engines
Indian airforce won't accept Kaveri engine in Tejas until and unless it achieves the desired thrust

China has been using indigenously-built engines for most of her fighter jets for more than half a century by this point, even as some of the engine models (from the Cold War-era) are direct/indirect copies of Soviet and British engines.

And speaking of Kaveri - That's despite both countries having the same starting line, so there's that.
