Liaoning is making good progress on the air ops front which is good. But when will the Liaoning gets its escort fleet ? China now has more than enough modern warships to form a escort fleet. So why hasn't it happen yet ?

If you mean an escort force that is organic to the carrier itself I don't see any evidence of that yet. There are photos showing the Liaoning with escorts IIRC.

Xinhua was talking about CSG live fire training involving dozens of vessels and dozens of aircrafts.

My feeling is that the escorts have always been there. While the J-15 pilots train landing and taking off on the CV-16, other escort vessels might be nearby training other aspects of CVG. It's hard for me to believe that the CV-16 is in the middle of the ocean by itself without escort...

Communication and coordination between the carrier and its escort fleet are also integral parts of CV ops. Much equipment aboard the CV has been designed to coordinate with escorts. It makes sense that the PLAN is training those aspects of the CV, along with the PLANAF fighters.

Especially when escort ops do not interfere with the J-15 training, it would make a lot of sense if they train these aspects simultaneously.

We don't see those aspects of the training because these activities are less obvious to spot and much less glorious than the J-15's.

Henri K take on the latest Liaoning exercise. It is the first time they did live firing of ammunition.
This exercise is the largest and most comprehensive sofar. To emphazise live firing, the pilot inscribe"shoot it" on his helmet. From the sound of it seem like combine exercise involving KJ200-KJ500 and dozen of ships

If the battle group (GAN) about the first Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning has already led naval exercises in the past - as was the case in December 2013 in the South China Sea for example - none are yet to live fire, at least not at the level of GAN, but it is now done.According to the state media and the Chinese navy, GAN Liaoning recently completed its first year with live fire, in the Bohai Bay, involving several dozen escort ships and aircraft. A dozen ammunition was used to destroy air and naval targets.

, the purpose of this exercise is to assess the level of training of its troops and armaments performance

ship dozens of aircraft and gathered in a certain area in Bohai Bay, where a dozen missile Air-Air, Air-Sea-Air and Surface was fired.

During this exercise with live fire, the aircraft carrier Liaoning and its escort ships established a monitoring network and early warning, and conducted different types of maneuver as air interception, anti-ship assault and the anti-aircraft.

The exercise has reached, according to the official statement, the expected goals. The naval group Liaoning will now build a new workout plan ahead, based on the results of the detailed analysis of the exercise.

Apart from these photos published by the Chinese navy, CCTV television also broadcast a report three minutes on this exercise, which revealed some interesting details.

For example, we learn that AWACS off the ground have also participated in the exercise. The exact model but it should be either the KJ-200 or KJ-500H . The Chinese navy has so far six AWACS KJ-200 type and at least two KJ-500H, part of which is based in the North.

Also seen as anti-ship missiles YJ-83KH , with a range of 200 kilometers and launched from aircraft fighter J-15 , made fly on at least one target vessel, converted from an old corvette Type 037 500 tonnes.

Both missiles CIWS missile HQ-10 also shot down a target drone, while another CIWS gun system, the H / PJ-11 of rate greater than 10,000 counts per minute, hit another.

Although neither the official statement of the Chinese navy or CCTV video has clarified the exact location nor the date of this exercise, an Index has still slipped into the video.

Indeed, a brief passage where we see three aircraft J-15 making a turn, one can notice two reference points on the ground near the coast.

The location of the place of this exercise live fire GAN Liaoning

Obviously, this exercise of the naval group Liaoning took place near the training center of naval aviation pilots Xingcheng, located 360 km northeast of Beijing. The sea around is the usual place where the aircraft carrier Liaoning and its planes are training.

And from the time the place is identified, it is actually quite easy to know the date because a military maneuver of this kind, to live fire, forcing local authorities to close a large area of banned unauthorized civilian navigation.

Just then consult the database of maritime alerts issued by the Administration of Marine Security of the province of Liaoning , to see which best fit the description.

Given the scale of the exercise, and also the scope of weapons used, the area bounded by the alert LN-291 seems to be the one that best, be it in the area and also the duration.

This first exercise live fire of battle group around the aircraft carrier Liaoning was therefore held from November 28 to 29, and lasted a total of 14 hours in an area that lies off the training center of Xingcheng, probably to facilitate logistics management devices.

Exercise is interesting insofar as it tells us that, a little more than 4 years after its introduction into the Chinese navy, the first Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning and his group gradually tilt pure driving "basic" to support onboard aircraft, in a first operational level to support real military maneuvers.

The road is obviously still long, but we can see a gradual ramp, methodical and unhurried Chinese navy, for construction of its first aircraft carrier battle group.

The next major step in will most likely take off and landing at night. Today no concrete information available to suggest that the Chinese have already mastered.

Finally, in the old folder "

" We hypothesized that the GAN Liaoning would conduct its first year beyond the first island chain in the Pacific of the West, 2018. in view of the progress so far, the assumption seems to be still valid.

The case forward.

I am not sure how the PLAN is organizing its carrier group(s).

The US Navy has specific vessels assigned to Carrier Strike Groups that harbor with or near the carrier when in port, and then form up with her while at sea. The carrier air wing does the same thing.

We know thePLAN has been out numerous times with escorts surrounding the Liaoning,

But since she is the only carrier available, my guess is that they use her to train others and so probably have different escorts in terms of DDGs, FFGs, and SSN when she goes out.

Whether there is a specific principle group assigned to the Liaoning by the PLAN, I cannot say. My guess is that there is, but that she also is used to get other vessels up to speed in escort duties.

Next year they will form up a second group.

within 2-3 years after that, they will form up a 3rd for their 3rd carrier.

At that point will they continue to use Liaoning to traain vessels that get assigned to new carrier? Will she also have her own assigned Strike Group?

My guess is that it will be yes to both questions.

Here is the Liaoning with her escorts. She has been seen like this in the SCS, and n the East China Sea and further out into the Pacific.

Here she is with a close in escrot, which she will almost always have to help in rescue duties if necessary, and to provide vital close in air defense if needed.

I really like this one, though the aircraft appear to be ground based J-11Bs during a photo op:
