I guess... the Second World War?
... where you could actually jam every single bit of available space on your flight deck (except the deck space for take-off operations) with aircrafts.
The era where having more of anything positive for the war effort is certainly much better than the opposite. More guns, more planes, more bombs, more torpedoes, more men - the better.
Personally, I like the idea as well - quantity is a quality of its own. But at today's age, having mere quantity can never be enough - it has to be complimented with excellent quality as well. Quantity alone could only ever serve as a desperate backup.
But that's just my personal observation.
