well sure you can but it will 1. cost more (not just money but time) and 2. have a hard time getting certified by Europe and US. now ofc with the way things are going if CR929 can carve out a market between China, Russia, central Asia and some of Eastern Europe, then it is definitely the way to go.
Not to mention sales for North Korea, Cuba, Venezuela, Iran, and Syria. Without even discussing African countries that are close in ties with China/Russia.

The issue is that you are not allowed overflight without foreign certifications, or to work with the countries needed aviation authorities.

Cost would increase, but the profits would purely benefit you. Development time in systems is a big one time cost, which goes down dramatically in subsequent designs. It also reduces the profits of competing countries.

Testing of the PD-35 engine gas generator demonstrator has begun

On September 15, 2021, the assembly of a demonstration gas generator of the PD-35 engine was completed in the Perm JSC UEC-Aviadvigatel. The gas generator was installed in an enclosed test bench and is being tested under standard atmosphere conditions in accordance with the approved program. This was reported by the press service of the United Engine Corporation.

On October 1, 2021, the idle mode was reached, the stable operation of the units and systems of the gas generator was ensured.

According to Alexander Inozemtsev, Managing Director-General Designer of UEC-Aviadvigatel JSC, the tests should confirm the fundamental performance of the gas generator design. Based on their results, it will be possible to evaluate the parameters of the nodes laid down in the TK.

The next stage of testing will take place at the Central Institute of Aviation Motors. P.I. Baranova. As part of the second stage of testing, the operation of a demonstration gas generator will be tested with heated air under pressure supplied to the inlet, which simulates the operating conditions of the unit as part of the engine. At the moment, a specialized test bench is being prepared at CIAM.

The creation of a demonstration gas generator and a technology demonstrator engine is necessary for the development of design and technological solutions to confirm the readiness of new technologies for use in the design of advanced engines. The developed gas generator will later become the basis for the creation of engines in the thrust range from 24 to 38 tf.

During the work on the project, UEC-Aviadvigatel specialists formed the appearance of a demonstration gas generator, developed its components and systems, issued design documentation and organized its production. For 18 months at the enterprises of UEC JSC, work was carried out on the manufacture of parts and assemblies of the PD-35 gas generator, the preparation of a bench base for its testing was in progress:
  • the high-pressure compressor rotor was manufactured at UEC-UMPO;
  • the stator part of the high-pressure compressor, the combustion chamber, and the high-pressure turbine were produced by UEC-Aviadvigatel, UEC-PM, NFMZ;
  • the central drive was produced at the PC "Salyut" of JSC "UEC";
  • units of the automatic control system were developed by UEC-STAR, ABRIS and others.
In order to optimize the manufacturing process, a number of high-tech enterprises of the Perm Territory were involved.

PD-35 is the largest in the line of Russian aircraft engines - the diameter of its fan is more than three meters. The gas generator consists of a high-pressure compressor, a combustion chamber and a high-pressure turbine - it is this part that drives the power plant.

The PD-35 project has been implemented by the United Engine Corporation since 2017. Gas turbine engines in the 35-ton thrust class have not previously been created in Russia. When developing the power plant, the scientific and technical groundwork created during the development of the PD-14 engine is used to the maximum. Also, work is underway to master 18 new "critical" technologies: new materials, coatings are created, new design solutions and technologies are applied.

In Ulyanovsk, the production of PKM prototypes of the wing for the SHFDMS CR929 began

19.11.2021

On November 17, 2021, the IX Forum "Composites without Borders" was held in person at the Skolkovo Technopark and online at INNOPROM Online. The forum was attended by representatives of federal and regional executive authorities, Russian companies in the production of composites and products from them, potential consumers of PCM products.

During the forum, Anatoly Gaidansky, Director General of AeroComposite JSC, First Deputy Director General of Irkut Corporation, noted that Russian composite materials had succeeded in fully replacing imported analogs. He also expressed confidence that domestic composites will be in demand in other aircraft construction projects, for example, in the development of the MC-21 aircraft family and in the creation of the Russian-Chinese CR929 wide-body airliner.

“The capacities of the AeroComposite enterprise in Ulyanovsk are almost 100% loaded. The plant is involved in two main projects. This is the manufacture of a wing and center section for the MC-21 aircraft, this is an ongoing operational project, serial production has been launched. The second is the creation of a wing for the Russian-Chinese CR929 aircraft. Prototypes are being made and technological processes are being tested", - Anatoly Gaidansky is quoted as saying.

CR929 is a new generation wide-body long-haul airliner. This, as they say at AeroComposite, is the most high-tech project in the portfolio of joint partnership projects between the two states.

JSC AeroComposite was established on December 2, 2008 for the development of technology and serial production of long-length integral load-bearing structures made of polymer composite materials by the vacuum infusion method for the MC-21 medium-haul liner. For this purpose, in 2011, an experimental laboratory was organized at the site of the Moscow office of AeroComposite. Manufacturing of composite aggregates and parts from PCM is carried out at two production sites in Kazan and Ulyanovsk. Vacuum infusion is used in Ulyanovsk

Can any of these countries (except iran) afford buying airline planes in any significant way?
About 100 aircraft of MD80 class or larger between them from a quick wiki, excluding Iran. Enough to start to pay off an aircraft project.

Countries that are underserved because of US political/economic policy. So who knows how big that market could be without restriction. A market of 150 million if their economies ever could be built up not to mention the tourism potential.

First you would have to Sino/Russo-fy the aircraft next trying to convince the Iranians to conduct a massive expansion of their aviation industry well beyond even their own ambitions. A few years back the Iranians were looking to buy 40 Superjet 100s. Your talking about convincing them to buy 100 C919s

By the time CR-929 is fully operational, ALL countries will accept it, no worries about that.
In 10 years Chinese economy will be double than today (and not to mention military power), and things will be much different than today in world`s geopolitics scene ;)
