more SoC testing comparing K9020 to SD 8 Gen 2 and MediaTek 9200. Looking good, of course what matters more is the performance, not just the speed of the chip. And we will get update on that latter.

Huge improvement on speed this time around while fully utilizing domestic supply chain. Huawei making good use of its advanced knowledge of 5G-A and longer + more powerful antenna

Also, I find the temperature of the Mate 70 Pro+ Antutu benchmark a bit unbelievable. Other phones usually end a benchmark run with about 40C, but somehow that screenshot shows only 33C. That could be something, but of course, I cannot completely rule out the possibility the score was obtained under some good cooling conditions.

GaN fundraising project has been put into production

BOE Huacan Optoelectronics said that its Zhuhai fundraising project was put into production in November 2024. According to previous reports by "Experts Say Three and a Half Generations", in December 2023, BOE Huacan Optoelectronics and Hengqin Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone held a signing ceremony and settled in "Beijing Huacan Optoelectronics (Guangdong) Co., Ltd." The company is positioned as the southern headquarters, international talent center and Micro LED & GaN chip R&D center .

BOE HC SemiTek also revealed the progress of GaN HEMT products :

At present, BOE Huacan Optoelectronics has passed the internal evaluation of the accelerated reliability aging test of its self-designed and outsourced GaN HEMT products, indicating that the system efficiency at the application end has reached the industry's first-class level and the product has entered the market promotion stage; the full wafer-level process of gallium nitride power devices at its Yiwu factory has also been opened up, and the wafer-level functional electrical properties are normal. Package-level reliability evaluation and small-batch strategic customer sampling will be carried out by the end of 2024, and large-scale market promotion is expected in Q2 2025 .

BOE HC SemiTek was founded in 2005. Since its establishment, it has continued to focus on the technical research and development of GaN in the LED field, and officially entered the field of GaN-based power electronic devices in 2020. At present, BOE HC SemiTek has four major production bases in Zhangjiagang, Yiwu, Yuxi and Zhuhai.

I was looking a bit at the Chinese high-end graphite industry. Graphite has many industrial uses including for semiconductors. China looks strong here. One of the global leaders is SGL Carbon from Germany. Here is one of their highest-end product line-ups. It is for the semiconductor industry.

I found several similar companies in China. Here is SHJ Graphite. This line-up is for semiconductor industry uses too. It looks very comparable to SGL Carbon's line-up. They have a competitor to all but one of their products. Their usual purity grade is 99.995% but they produce to up to 99.9998% purity with special order which is the same as the German company. Grain size is another figure of merit. Smaller is better. They are close here too. The highest grade in SGL Carbon's line-up has an average grain size of 3 micrometers. For comparison, the highest grade in SHJ Graphite's line-up has an average grain size of 5 micrometers.

I also found this recent news article from the Chinese state media. It seems this topic got attention from the government a few years ago. The claim is Minmetals Corporation reached the "world class" purity of 99.99995% using domestic equipment.

Process research on nitride and oxide protective layers of EUV multilayer films.

Abstract: In the process of high energy and high power extreme ultraviolet (EUV) irradiation, carbon deposition and surface oxidation are easy to form on the surface of the EUV mirror, which will affect its reflectivity and shorten its service life. To solve this problem , technology of nitride and oxide capping coating on the surface of extreme ultraviolet multilayer film was studied experimentally and characterized. In the preparation process, based on DC reactive magnetron sputtering coating technology, the "hyperbola" relationship between process gas flow and sputtering voltage was studied, to optimize the control of the amount of reactive gas, and then reduce the influence of reactive gas on Mo/Si multilayer films during reactive sputtering. Based on this method, TiN, ZrN and TiO 2 capping layer were plated on the surface of Mo/Si multilayer films and were characterized by grazing incident X-ray reflection (GIXR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It is proved that the nitride capping layer has certain performance advantages.

Non-Apple flagship chips in the market right now are the Snapdragon 8 Elite (Gen 4) and Dimensity 9400.

Great progress by Huawei if it is only behind by 1-2 generations. At such high performing chips, observable difference is almost nil to the common user
I took a look and MT9200+ was still being made deep into last year and was using N4P. We just got to MT9400 with N3.
SD8 Gen 2 was fabbed using N4
So, HW's SoC just on pure performance level is 2 years behind. Not bad for using 6nm process. Now, if they can just improve core design further for Pura 80 and they can get another 10% gain in CPU portion.

We are going to find out about power consumption soon enough when some of the test results come out. I will be shocked if it's as good as SD8 Gen 2.

US to reportedly sanction 200 more Chinese chip firms — high bandwidth memory might also see export bans

Please, Log in or Register to view URLs content!
The latest swarm of sanctions reportedly targets roughly 200 Chinese firms, and US companies are prohibited from exporting select technologies or products to them. Reuters suggests that the US Department of Commerce aims to push these new regulations before the Thanksgiving break - or November 28.
Moreover, another wave of sanctions is set to follow in December targeting the export of HBM (High Bandwidth Memory), primarily to choke China's advance in the AI domain.

Nomura Securities said that Changxin Storage's monthly production capacity has reached 160,000 pieces

Changxin Storage's third factory officially started construction in Beijing at the beginning of the year, and is expected to go into mass production next year, when production capacity will continue to surge

Changxin's DDR5 has also come out, and its technology and production capacity are gradually catching up with South Korea
