Tsui Hark made (directed or produce) the Jet Li 1992 film Swordsman 2 and the East is Red. The former was losely based on the novel. I think the latter which was just some random story of DongFang Bubai. The original story probably didn't have the ML have sexual or romantic thought of DFB.

It’s worse than that. Dongfang Bubai in the original was very old and unattractive and was supposed to demonstrate the evils of power obsession whereas he/she was played by Brigette Lin in Swordsman II. This is a huge reinterpretation at the time.

Tsui Hark also started the young and hot Fahai trend with Zhao Wenzhuo starring as Fahai in his Green Snake.

Reviews online for the CNY movies are pretty positive for Nezha 2, but lukewarm for Creation of the Gods 2, and Legend of Condor Heroes is being memed to hell on XHS. Shame, Chinese games are hitting it out of the park with the most recent banger being Genshin's latest Lantern Rite event, but I guess we'll have to wait longer for a quality Chinese blockbuster movie.

Take the trailer for this fantasy movie that just dropped recently. An indie project with a mostly crowd funded and private investor driven budget, but cinematography, atmosphere, and costumes already look so much better than many recent Chinese productions.

Chines eanimation shows seem to have better storytelling and scriptwriting than normal shows... maybe they have limited time or need to be planned before making animations...?

Jingyong wasn't happy with the choice at the time, but we don't know if he changed his mind after the movie's success. Swordsman II was an extremely good reinterpretation, combining traditional Wuxia with elements of Samurai films. Lin Qingxia's performance was amazing and made her version of Dongfang Bubai an instant classic.

I actually watched this movie before I got to read the books, and as a result, the showdown with DFBB in the novel felt rather underwhelming.
