I just realized that Hark Tsui got to make a Louis Cha adaptation after the author has passed away. Supposedly he was pissed off at the reinterpretation of Dongfang Bubai.
Tsui Hark made (directed or produce) the Jet Li 1992 film Swordsman 2 and the East is Red. The former was losely based on the novel. I think the latter which was just some random story of DongFang Bubai. The original story probably didn't have the ML have sexual or romantic thought of DFB.
Not sure if this has been shared. What stands out to me is the director and one of the lead actresses (a female general) are Mongols. Even more special is the lead female role (妲己) is played by a model turned actress from Russia (Mongol father, Russian mother). She was a model in East Asia outside of the PRC before the movie. But once selected, she learned 1) Chinese in a few short years and 2) acting in the acting camp set up exclusively for the movie. She is well-loved not only for her nuanced portrayal of a deadly attractive, wild, loyal/grateful fox spirit who learns about the human world and falls deeply in love with her savior (商纣王) but also for her kindness and generosity in real life.
