Janes defnse weekly article about J-11B

according to May 9th isue of janes def. weekly,China make tremendous improvenment over the original SU-27SK.
new flight control ystem, strengthining te fuselage, new glass cockpit, reducing RCS.
the original RCS for SU-27sk was 15m,was reduced to 5m (some quote at 3m)
massive use composite material, saving as much 700kg ,increases the fuselage lifespan by extra 10,000 hour.
the radar itself is more powerful than J-10 type-1473,can detect 20 target and track 4 target.
(this is translation from english to chinese,do anyone has original JDW article?)

Slightly off topic, but i just read jane's terms of use and i must say they've stepped over a line there. They claim you are not allowed to reproduce information that you read on their pages, which is bull, as they are not the makers of that information but merely one of conduits for the information in reaching broader public. None of the info they offer is secret, it is all in publich domain. They would probably cancel one's subscription without refund if one went and wrote down what info their site offers, but if one would have money and time to pursue a court case against them, they would have a very tought time on their hands. In the meantime, in case they want to share the info, i encourage people with subscriptions to anonymously re tell (Not copy and paste) the contents on some blog or somewhere.

By the way, who is the author of the article? Hewson or Pinkov?

15 meter RCS for SU-27SK might be to big, but then one has to look at two air inlet , AL-31 large frontal fan intake ,source for large source of RF reflection.

nope, it's by Jonathan Wen. I just got the article now.
D etails have emerged of
China’snext-generation
J-11B heavy air superiority
fighter aircraft:
a further development
of Sukhoi’s Su-27SK (Chinese
designation J-11) that ended
production in 2004 ahead of its
planned run.
Shenyang Aviation Corporation
assembled 95 J-11 fighters from
imported Russian components,
although the original project had
called for 200 aircraft, and it is
likely production was stopped in
anticipation of the improved J-11B.
Although based on the Su-
27SK, the latest incarnation has
substantial improvements including
a reduced radar cross-section
(RCS), a strengthened airframe and
an improved fire-control radar, as
well as a new flight-control system,
glass cockpit and engine.
The improvements are planned
to take the aircraft to a fourthgeneration
platform. It is known
that theYanliangFlightTest Center
currently has three J-11B aircraft
under testing.
The most significant change for
the aircraft is the reduced RCS;
sources claim that this brings the
RCS from the 15 m 2 of the Su-27 to
less than 5 m2 and possibly as low
as 3 m2 , but it is unlikely that the
minimal changes proposed could
achieve this.
The change is not to the shape
of the aircraft but involves modification
of the air-intake lip with a
radar wave shield and installation
of radar-absorbing materials on the
intake interior. The RCS will be
reduced with Chinese-made signature-
reduction paint.
The strengthening of the airframe
– a key aspect since the life
expectancy of the aircraft has been
criticised by the People’s Liberation
Army Air Force – has been
achieved through wind-tunnel tests
of the weapons carriage.
Additionally, the empty weight
of the aircraft has been reduced by
about 700 kg through the use of
composite materials. It is believed
a further 10,000 hours have been
added to the life of the aircraft compared
with the Su-27SK.
The radar installed on the J-11B
is believed to be more powerful
than the Type 1473 installed on the
J-10; it is estimated to be able to
track 20 targets and simultaneously
lock onto six. ■
anyhow, quite an impressive fighter if all of the above is true, although I do call into question the part on the RCS reduction. Sounds a little excessive to me.

RCS reduction sounds optimistic to me but then 3m2 is not that low.

The RCS measures sound more than familiar. Did we not discuss RCS reduction measures on Flankers in some forum about RAMing the intake tunnel, ramps and even the front of the compressor blades? The modification of the air intake lip with the radar shield is something new though.

The weight reduction by adding more composites is expected. 700kg sounds reasonable.

Now has 10,000 filght hours of life? That's something new. I wonder how they achieved that. That's some design overhaul of the airframe. Thats quite high really, even by Western standards. Maybe this could be a bit optimistic, though not impossible.

The radar sounds very impressive too. Wish it had some range figures.

Overall it sounds quite impressive, though the RCS figures sound optimistic to me, even though RAM is applied. But its similar to Russian figures though, about boasting reducing Flanker radar signature using RAM application. So I should not be surprised there too.

The one figure that I kept on reading is 4 m^2 for F-15C after applying some RCS reduction method. Although, if you factor in the payload that it carries, I think it will be higher. The one figure I kept on reading is Russians claiming that their new RAM paint can reduce RCS by 500%.
