Okay, everyone. What is this new build at CSIC in Tianjin? Nestled between two other ships here?

No sonar dome, but this is definitely on the order of a destroyer-sized vessel. A big Coast Guard cutter?

The hull shape reminded me of this:

The first new-type patrol ship F91 that China plans to export to Nigeria has been launched. It will be delivered in the middle of 2014 as scheduled. It will become the first ship of the Nigerian navy's P18N project. During an interview, Major General Yin Zhuo made particular mention of the vessel's stealth performance.

The first F91 stealth patrol ship was successfully launched on January 27. Its major missions include patrolling and guard duties along the coastline, protecting exclusive maritime economic areas, carrying out marine search and rescue, and preventing marine pollution. According to relevant data, the F19 patrol ship has a full length of 95 meters and a waterline length of 89 meters. With two diesel master engines, and a top speed of about 39 km/hour, it can navigate on the sea for 20 consecutive days.

On the stealth performance of F91, Yin Zhuo pointed out that the ship's bows lean slightly inward, and bevels are superimposed on the upper part of the deck; as a result, the radar reflection points are few and the radar image is small. He pointed out that an 1,800-ton ship with stealth capacity will have the radar reflection area of a ship of about 500 tons; it can be discovered only when it is very close to the radar of enemy, and cannot be observed if an appropriate distance is kept from the enemy radar.

Modern terrorists have a growing capacity for counter-reconnaissance and a strong combat capacity. While at sea, some can seek out nearby military ships patrolling in search of them. Therefore, the stealth performance of F91 is also essential for coping with non-traditional security threats.

I just read some news few days ago that Vietnamese are spending US $540 million on 32 new coast guard and fishery patrol vessels. A coast guard ships race in the South China Sea! :D

Vietnam would go broke if they want to compete with China ... Chinese economy is almost 60x Vietnamese economy, so every a Billion dollar Vietnamese spend on defence, China could do $60B. If it was me, I wouldn't do that. Cooperation is the best way ..... also Vietnam and China have a very long border and they will always be a neighbour for thousands years to come (if we human still exist)

Yep, I was thinking exactly the same thing. It is insane to think that Vietnam can compete with China in an arms race. Anything the Vietnamese can buy, China can build bigger, better and more. So where does it end? Negotiation is the best way to go. China has negotiated with many of its neighbors on disputed border issues. And in many cases, China is willing to take a loss.

Exactly what I was thinking too. How is it that China could work and have joint explorations with Malaysia while having the same territorial dispute but not with Philippines and Vietnam? Having rational discussions and negotiations are definitely better than having emotional outbursts. Besides, building bigger fleet of ships to counter China would only hinder time and money from doing better things, like improving the living standards of their citizens. I guess that is why Malaysia have better stability and living standards than both Philippines and Vietnam.

Diplomacy still works.
