For building warships, they are insignificant.
If you include Japan and south Korea...that is simply not so.

But, by using SouthWest you may parse them out. But you cannot prse them out of any caomparison with China, since both of them are directly in the spheres of influence of one another.

Both have built similarly large AEGIS ships...and are capable of building even larger ones.

Certainly not in the numbers the Chinese are now building...but with their mutual defense treaties with the US and other western pacific nations...they do not individually need to.

Whenever the 055's and the 001A are actually commissioned the real interesting thing to see would be more and more sophisticated PLAN SAG, CSG, and ARG exercises, especially combined arms ones involving ground forces and land based aircraft. While these are nice assets for far seas operations they are also crucial additions for near seas defense up through the first island chain.
Agreed...and I expect we will see not only single CSGs...butvery quickly will see a dual CSG with both CV-16 and CV-17, featuring at first the single Type 055 with probably four Type 052Ds and some Type 054As...maybe substituting one or two Type 052Cs in there.

Such a group would be very powerful and make a huge statement...and I expect the Chinese will make it as soon a CV-17 and the Type 055 are both commissioned and operational...heck, they may do it during the naval trials of which ever one is last (CV-17 or Type 055) just to show it.

...an I could not blame them for doing so.

The fact is, the US has possessions in the area where islands such as Japan, the Philippines and others would reside in the Asian area. Russia is certainly an Asian country geographically.
OT
US do own Japan and SK but not any more the Philippines and when the Korean problem is solved they loose SK.

Okay, in order to avoid any flame wars or bad feelings...let's leave off with any future comparisons or statements about the "BIGGEST" surface combatants since World War II comparisons.

The points on both sides have been made and we do not need to sidetrack or deflect the thread any further with that particular argument.

Further comments about that particular issue on either side will be deleted. The points have been made.

DO NOT RESPOND TO THIS MODERATION.

I think it is reasonable to herald 055 as the dawn of a new era for PLAN, as the first time China has built a warship that is larger, more advanced, and more capable than its contemporaries. But what is most significant about 055 is that, in contrast to other warships of similar or greater size, it will be built in significant numbers. To put it another way, it is not the ship that is impressive, but the fleet that is being assembled. The launch of the first 055 is a statement of intent from an emerging superpower, and is eminently worthy of the symbolism.

yes, as I've written on my blog a number of times over the last year or so, it isn't just the size, the armament, the sensors or the overall capability of the ship which is important, but the potential number in which they may be built at which will have both a psychological effect but also more importantly a real tangible strategic effect.

"Potential" is the key word here, since nobody can say with any confidence how many are going to be built.

Thats the beauty of being active in this forum ... there is no certainty/confidence .. and we hear/listen from many experts and sources .. including yourself.

If everything was as clear as crystal ... there won't be any excitement anymore ;););)
