More than the number of Zumwalts, Kirovs, Atagos, Sejong the Greats, Iowas and Long Beaches, that's for sure. Probably more than all of those types put together.
3 + 2 + 2 + (3-6) + 4 + 1 = 15-18. This seems a reasonable number of total production 055s to me. OTOH this is certainly not a 052C/D/E replacement number, but rather a perfect number for a cruiser supplement to a primary destroyer and frigate fleet.

I think it is reasonable to herald 055 as the dawn of a new era for PLAN, as the first time China has built a warship that is larger, more advanced, and more capable than its contemporaries. But what is most significant about 055 is that, in contrast to other warships of similar or greater size, it will be built in significant numbers. To put it another way, it is not the ship that is impressive, but the fleet that is being assembled. The launch of the first 055 is a statement of intent from an emerging superpower, and is eminently worthy of the symbolism.

Let's just say what we've seen the PLAN doing recently is just the ''warm up''. the game hasn't even started yet!

Depends on "how much" more than all of those "put together" (i.e.: 15-18) it ends up being... also, as a side note, JMSDF are building another two Atagos on top of their first pair, so I suppose it should be 17-20. Considering ROKN in the last year or so seem to have confirmed they will be building another three Sejongs to make six total, Lethe's statement would refer to 20+ 055s... but who's counting.

I agree hat there will be numerous Type 055s...and there should be.

The US built 27 Ticonderoga cruisers and has upgraded and maintaned 22 of them and will continue to do so.

Ultimately they will be replaced...the Burker Flight III is going to be a tie over to some extent, but ultimately a large surface combatant that is meant to be the principle e scort and battle manager will be built to replace the Ticonderogas.

Right now, only two nations are capable of, and willing ...and need ...to build such numbers of warships.

The Orkeans will end up with six se Jon DDX-III vessels, and that is a LOT for their nation. Japan will have eight of their own large AEGIS vessels, four of them the larger Atago class.

But the US has numerous carrier groups and Amphibuous groups that need that level of vessel. China is clearly going to have a large number of carriers (I reckon six beofre all is said and done) and Amphibious groups too...and defending them as they defend the SLOCs will require a goodly number of these vessels.

ANd I give China full credit for recognizing it and then acting on it...and in a very direct straight forward manner too.

Clearly you're not counting because I already accounted for the Sejongs ("3-6"). All of this is just petty nitpicking anyway, since none of us know even roughly how many are going to be built.

And do Americans, Russians or Australians consider themselves Asians?
No clue what your question is attempting to insinuate.

There are 22 Ticos. There will be six Se Jongs, there will be three Zumwalts, and there will be four Atagos. So those right there, which are the active vessels make for 35 vessels. I am not sure at all that the Chinese plan 35 Type 055s.

...and ultimately, the US will build a replacement for the Ticos.

First that will be 10-12 Fl;ight III Burkes...but those will simply buy the time to develop a very new and capable replacement. But it wilkl come.

As I said above. The Chinese deserve full credit and respect for what they have done with this class and what they plan on doing with the numbers. I recon something more like 16-20 of them

That in itself will be an amazing number to go along with the Type 052Ds, which they may well build 24-30 of before all is said and done.

The plans, and they have been approved call for:

6 Se Jongs
4 Atagos
3 Zumwalts

and of course there are :

22 Ticos.

That makes for 35 such vessels.

...and the US will build into the Burke IIIs before they begin decomissioning the Ticos...and ultimately will build a replacement for the Ticos.

I expect the chinese will build 16-20 Type 055s, and that they will go along with something on the order of 24-30 Type 052Ds

But time will tell.
