re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread

A-10 is not a jet fighter, if you want to count that, why not say C-5 and B-52?

No you're right, and technically, neither is the Joint Strike Fighter, and Terran has actually cued us into this angle by bringing up the venerable A-10. The JSF is primarily a strike aircraft designed to be a fast, stealthy alternative to the A-10, as well as able to perform many of the A-10 missions in a stand-off posture. The A-10 was designed to be survivable in the down and dirty close air support role, the whole cockpit area is armored and the twin jet engines are tucked up and behind the wing for the same reason as are the twin vertical stabs, and everything is behind that lovely gatling gun. The JSF was always intended to be able to fight its way out, after sneaking IN, it was NOT designed, nor will it excell as an air superiority fighter, that my friends was the leading lady, the F-22, and for what it is worth, the F-22 is still performing far, far, far, beyond any of its peers, or proposed replacements or adversaries, check out that canopy? Incidentally, the A-10 is being rewinged with new center section upgrades, and full outer panels, because well, the JSF really won't be able to do that whole down and dirty thang! Brat

Gee, I wonder how fast the cruiser was going? thankfully there werent any injuries.

I wonder if it was due to equipment failure or crew laxity. I'm more than willing to donate my made in China fish finder to the U.S. navy if it helps them detect subs:D

They were both close to port therefore weren't going fast at all. I think it's more of a miss communication between the two vessels.

F35 is seeing cuts from almost every country which had ordered it

Turkey is now thinking of cutting its order too, main reason cost over run and delay

While I am sad to note that, its only fair to mention that the 500 billion defense cut in the sequestration bill will result in a 1 billion dollar cut to the F-35 procurement program in 2013, included in that are the loss of four F-35s in 2013, not sure who's or which version, but that is devastating to our own acquisition plans. This published in AFMs daily report last week, I don't remeber what day, maybe Wednesday? Brat

I was very careful in my phrasing I said "Fighter Class" Not Fighter. A10C is a twin engine aircraft with a single seat armed too attack via gun or ordinance.

Only YOU would classified A-10 and F-35 to be in the same class, there are far more difference between them than similarity.

And your original statement was that F-35 cockpit view is not that bad, it is the same as F-18. When that fact cannot stand closer examination you shift to putting A-10 and F-35 in the same category, which is even more absurd.

Fact it, out of all modern US jet fighters. F-35 have the WORST cockpit visibility view.

The JSF is classified as a strike aircraft, just like the A-10, that was its DESIGNED ROLE, both Aircrafts primary mission is A2G to say otherwise is to deny the truth. ALL air to ground aircraft have substantial structure placed AROUND the pilot for his protection. The YF-17 was a fighter adaption of the Northrupp XP-530 light weight fighter design, the F/A-18 is a naval adaption of the YF-17 light weight fighter to carrier use for air to air and air to ground, hence the F/A designation! Visability is a priority for Air to Air, Protection is a priority for Air to Ground. However the JSF is about 10 years behind its early projections and A-10 is being upgraded as a stop gap measure and because it still fullfills the Air to Ground role better than any other aircraft!

Just because JSF have A2G ability, does not make it a pure ground attack striker like A-10 or Su-25 or Q-5. The role of those air craft is pure A2G, the best they can do is fire short range A2A missiles, while verses a jet fighter they don't stand a chance, they don't have the speed, the radar, the weapon.

No matter how you want to spin it, F-35 and A-10 are totally different fighters, sure F-35 can do some of what A-10 do, but at what A-10 excel at, F-35 won't even come close.

And what F-35 can do such as firing Aim-120, going supersonic, dog fight etc.. A-10 is not even close.

Just because both platform can do some of what each other can do, does not make them the same category.

And come on man.... coming from you.. "Air Force" Brat, you should be the last one to make such mistake. And just because F-35's visibility sucks does not mean it is offensive to you, facts are facts.
