re: F-35 Joint Strike Fighter Thread
No you're right, and technically, neither is the Joint Strike Fighter, and Terran has actually cued us into this angle by bringing up the venerable A-10. The JSF is primarily a strike aircraft designed to be a fast, stealthy alternative to the A-10, as well as able to perform many of the A-10 missions in a stand-off posture. The A-10 was designed to be survivable in the down and dirty close air support role, the whole cockpit area is armored and the twin jet engines are tucked up and behind the wing for the same reason as are the twin vertical stabs, and everything is behind that lovely gatling gun. The JSF was always intended to be able to fight its way out, after sneaking IN, it was NOT designed, nor will it excell as an air superiority fighter, that my friends was the leading lady, the F-22, and for what it is worth, the F-22 is still performing far, far, far, beyond any of its peers, or proposed replacements or adversaries, check out that canopy? Incidentally, the A-10 is being rewinged with new center section upgrades, and full outer panels, because well, the JSF really won't be able to do that whole down and dirty thang! Brat
A-10 is not a jet fighter, if you want to count that, why not say C-5 and B-52?
