THANKs

But just a requestion: is it simply "Wind Thunder" or "Wind & Thunder" ??

Deino

In Chinese, two analogous/comparable characters put together implies an AND relation between these two characters. For examples, EAT-DRINK implies eat and drink; PAPER-PEN implies paper and pen. Sometimes, two contradictory characters have other meanings. For examples, EAST-WEST means something; LIGHT-SHADOW means time.

Another picture shows these two characters.

It is said that PLA Army Aviation formed a WZ-10 performance team, Fong-Lei or "Wind Thunder." These two characters could be seen in the tail structure. Fong-Lei team will have a public demonstration during Tian-jin helicopter exhibition.

Feng-lei, not fong-lei.

Are you a speaker of Cantonese by any chance?

What's your point? You're Taiwanese?

Tongyong is rather rare outside Taiwan - pinyin is the most dominant and Wade-Giles would be the next most common, I didn't really recognise it at first, upon reflection, a Cantonese speaker won't render 雷 as 'lei', so yeah.

So what if he comes from Taiwan or speaks Cantonese? Does it affect the information he is conveying? Who cares where he comes from? Different regions of the Chinese-speaking world have different ways of pronouncing Chinese words. So there is no right way or wrong way of spelling it using alphabet. He clearly indicated what the actual Chinese characters are and correctly translated into English. That should be good enough for everyone.

I hadn't realize that I have to ask your permission to ask other people what languages they may or may not speak. You want to point out the forum rule that says it's bad form to make remarks about other members' possible background?

It is nosy/impolite at best and offensive at the worst when you involve someone's nationality in your discussion of something completely irrelevant of nationality. It implies stereotyping. Where he comes from and which dialect of Chinese he speaks have nothing to do with his information on the name of the WZ-10 team. His way of spelling the Chinese words in alphabet may be different from yours, but it does not mean his way is wrong. Keep drilling on his spelling is disrespectful. And making a connection with his nationality and his native language is even worse.

It is a common courtesy NOT to ask someone about his/her background, especially on an internet forum. Ever heard of respect for privacy?

BTW, the forum rule says not to make comments about someone's English. So by the same token, do not question someone's Chinese.
