I say let the EU cut Russia out of SWIFT. They'll have to buy Russian gas in Euros or Rubles after that. Unlike USD or Euros, gas keeps your lights, heaters, and factories ON.

I forsee the US attempting to step in to supply gas to Europe. US O&G companies could get some windfall from this conflict. But Europe will be paying premium for American gas. Especially with O&G prices are soaring, American O&G corporations are gonna fleece the Europeans. Classic capitalism. Cost of living in Europe is gonna go even higher than it already is. Societal problems coming over the horizon.

If Europe is forced to go back to buying from Russia again. They'll have to bypass the Swift system and USD.

So all in all. Russia getting cut off from SWIFT is just bad for the West, no matter how they'll try to justify it. Simply because, gas is still more useful than currency.
@Sardaukar20 bro, I never seen an intellectual European countries act so stupidly, Why hurt yourself when you don't have a beef in the game. Where are the De Gaulles and Helmut Kohl the great pragmatic leaders. I'm disappointed in Merkel , she have the stature to carry Europe to be a third bloc BUT the Atlanticism in her is so strong, that she was blinded by ideology rather than Europe interest.

Right... You pay the Russians with Euros they then can't use to buy anything with. Might as well be toilet paper.
There are a lot of trees to make toilet paper in Siberia. No need to get shiny colored Euro bank note paper.
There needs to be an exchange mechanism or trade is impossible. The EU tried to make such a scheme outside of SWIFT when the US sanctioned Iran in an ad-hoc manner and we know how well that worked...

If the EU arrest Russian assets in Europe, they will do the same to European assets in Russia which I heard can be worth as much as $500 Billion USD. This includes several power plants and the like in Russia which are owned by European, for example German, companies.

So far there's a lot of ridiculous claims coming from the ukrainian side about what's going on with thin evidences, some even are already disproven to be untrue, contrary to nearly a complete silence from russia. I can't help but notice the similarity with our case against the indians, how the constant exaggerated lies from them during the border conflict were also filling up the news story, but then actual evidences from our side started to come to cement a more grounded narrative after things have calmed down. Perhaps once the dust is settled we might see the same of a more grounded russia's perspective on how the conflict actually happened.
