Thing is, the US has bullshitted so much about this kind of stuff before, it eventually becomes hard not to doubt any claim that somehow has their backing, specially when just a couple of years ago proof came out that the whole Douma thing was staged by US-friendly jihadist, which also had the backing of the UN.
Many of the atrocity propaganda stories during WWI that vilified the Germans into monsters were proven as a hoax after the war, which led many Americans to believe they were deceived into intervention. That only reinforced their isolationist sentiments. The memory of that lie led to major skepticism during WW2, when most people refused to believe the stories about Nazi atrocities in occupied Europe and especially not the Holocaust.

I have the impression that modern day people are a lot more susceptible to propaganda due to short attention spans and almost complete disinterest in learning history. The problem with short attention spans is that you need to keep inundating them with propaganda lest they forget all about it the week after.

The Brits didnt pay off the debt until 2006 since it was taken in 1946. Ukraine is never gonna pay this back given their economic prospect.
britain did not pay back it’s WWII debts to the US until 2006 because the US set such a absurdly low fixed interest rate, 2%, and put in repayment terms that allow the debtor to skip an annual payment whenever the central back interest rate of the debtor is higher the interest on the loan, that for most people who owe WWII debts to the US, it is far cheaper to keeping paying the interest then to ever pay off the debt.

The worst part of it, is that no one gets punished for pushing the lies. So either when an atrocity actually happens, people don't really care anymore.

And western media is a recurrent factor in all of this. The same psychopats who helped pushed the Iraq narrative, helped push Libya, then pushed Syria and none of them have to issue a single rectraction or apology for being pathologic liars and murderers.

China has it right whenever they harass a western journalist.

To be honest, these actions are banking on the public perception and attitude, or lack of a better English word, ”民风“ (I translate it as "the civilized-ness of the people").

The more the West does this, they more desensitized their public become. The aftermath is that people will simply be less and less intrigued and responsive to these news. The entire society will become less civilized, less united, less loyal to their Moralities and Higher values, less loyal, trusting and supportive to their governments, and more selfish and self-serving.

Of course, what's worse is that people become more tribalistic, in which they don't care about truth, real human rights, and civilization anymore. They start to just want to win: both in a real conflict and in a conflicts of words. They buy into their side's rhetoric simply because they want to win and triumph over the other side.

This kinda mirror the 春秋 transition to 战国 in China: the shared principles, code-of-honor and game rule declines amongst the many feudal states, and Might and Violent Force become the new paramount principles.
