I dont know why its strategic. when satellites can see where the airdefense systems located and they planned for gaps inside.
The fact that could not use missile or MLRS but need to send choppers for oil storage show more desperation.
It could be that the attack on the supposed ammo depot previously in Oktyabr'skii, Belgorod might also be done in this manner.
Whatever missile Ukraine has right now, won't have enough accuracy to hit both of these targets from a safe enough distance away.

I think choppers were used to exploit that gap, because trajectory of missiles could be predicted and shot down by interceptors? I'm not sure myself, because I don't know how anti-missile system works.

You still have the video for this one?

Helicopters can bob and weave between gaps in AD systems. The US opened the Gulf War with a raid by Apaches after all.

What makes this surprising for me is the VKS didn't have any AWACS up or at least fighters on patrol in the area. The UAF doesn't have a lot of aircraft left, but a raid like this is a strategic value for just the morale boost and embarrassment to Russia if nothing else.

Reportedly from Belgorod...

Them boys clink when they walk.
The Russians were absolutely not anticipating that from happening. Those boys could have done a lot more damage to other things if they wanted to... Having conventional mobile AA batteries at several locations within the city and within neighbouring oblasts to Ukraine will be necessary now... If they had them prepared, the Russians would have shot down those choppers easy...

Absolutely.

If you mean the Ukrainians, potentially, but it would be worth far more to the UAF to get out without leaving a crash or shoot down behind in Russia. We did this and got away with it is far more powerful than blowing up the fuel depot plus more and then losing the helicopters.

That actually is an interesting thought. We will see a redeployment of AD assets away from the front lines? Would that - potentially - make the front lines more vulnerable to air attack? Or the strike packages the Russians have been sending in no longer have ground based protection from interception?

Its almost like giving the initiative to the enemy doesn't work...
Does Russia have enough AA to cover all their important positions?...

That's why it is so much preferable to control the airspace than simply sitting back and praying that the enemy won't exploit gaps in your AD network
