Izyum has been captured by Russia for a few days. However, Russia was only able to secure Kamyanka yesterday. Russia has not been able to clear the surrounding areas. There still many Ukrainian troops that are fighting in the outskirts of Izyum and threatening the route M03. It probably would take a few more days before Russia can secure the surrounding area and use route M03 to march south to Slovyansk.

That would be a really bad move by Russia politically.
Installing Yanukovych would just enrage the average Ukrainians even more - to the point of spontaneous human combustion.
There was a reason he had to flee hence why he would basically become a huge rallying point for the fight against Russia.
There are plenty of historic precedent where domestic political figures who had been unacceptable to the populace during peace time became widely seen as the national unity candidate when peacetime expectation had to be revised in light of war. It could go both ways, a candidate seen as excessively bellicose before the war can be seen as a potential national savior during the war, conversely, a candidate seen as maybe mildly traitorous before the war can be seen as the only one who could manage a necessary working relationship in the aftermath of the war.

I think if Putin was actually in a position to install yanukovych, then the social progress of the ukrainian anti-russia crusade must have undergone a forceful adjustment of perspective and expectation. In that case there will certainly be a window when substantial part of previously anti-russian population will now see some of the political candidates who previously had been seen as too pro-russian as least bad plausible candidate in light of new reality.

whether yanukovych is such a candidate i can’t say. but certainly ukraine will not be in any position to make previously accepted minimum standard of anti-russia am an minimum standard in popular mind for future candidates if putin is dictating terms.

I think amongst population of prewar ukraine, even those who suffered from Russian bombardment and siege warfare, some fraction must now be thinking that many other people seem very happy to drain their blood for purposes more important to those other people than to them.

"We are not retreating, we are maneuver warfare" reminds me what the Americans said after China kicking their ass in Korean War.

U.S. Marine Corp: "We are not retreating, we are just advancing in another direction" (in response to the longest US military retreat in US history against Chinese forces)

Russians: "We are not retreating, we are giving you a chance at peace talks, and also doing 'maneuver warfare' to advance in another direction. We didn't want Kiev anyways, we just distracting you."

Give me a fking break, I don't think Putin is play 5D chess here. He couldn't scare Kiev into submission by encircling it via rapid blitzkrieg of capital region (initial objective), nor can he siege Kiev with merely 60K troops, so now it's reallocating troops to concentrate forces against breaking Ukrainian army's back in Donbass area, a far more realistic objective.

What the.. is every country/state Russia has major influence in just going to be absorbed by them? or for this case, its a move to pressure Georgia from joining NATO?
The West already threw everything they had against Russia, so I see no reason why Russia should be restrained any more.

Congratulations to Europe, they are going to have this man as their neighbour now:

In case they don't know who this man is, they should talk to S.Korea and Japan to learn how annoying and unpredictable he can be..

One day you are ok, next day you get ICBM warnings and you run to the shelters lol

Whenever I see the Russians using SAMs to take out these small drones, often commercial ones like you-know-who, I keep thinking wouldn't it be more economical to use ack-acks like a Zu-23 instead?

Granted it wouldn't be as precise, but the flak rounds would take them out just the same. Even with something as old as a Strela-10 or an Osa, I just think how cost-ineffective it is, that they'd be better served taking out helos or Su-25s (whatever the Ukrainians got left) and actual military drones like the TB2.

Either they're getting desperate or they don't care.

Which makes me wonder about western aid going into Ukraine. There's been pictures of thousands of 4x4s in Poland ready to go into the Ukraine. No doubt they will have filled up their tanks to the max to prevent having to rely on Ukrainian supplies.

Some are going to Lvov and back but some will be needed to transport to Kiev and other cities, as well as to the armies in the east. What happens when they get there? I bet most will end up being abandoned when they run out of fuel.

I think Ukraine will have lots of expensive 4x4s and after the war is over and the Russian used car market is going to be flooded with them.

It'll go well with the cheap fuel prices...
